Wow where do I even begin? I transferred from SCAD Atlanta to SCAD Savannah last Fall and left everything I built during my first year, behind me. I left in hopes of getting a more beneficial experience at the SCAD Savannah acting department. But I went every single day missing my sister and friends in Atlanta. My heart shattered many times. Throughout the year I kept asking myself the same question, “did I make the right decision?” I didn’t feel like I belonged here, but I pushed through and I know that I do. I learned a lot about myself, made my first film, became a stage manager, and by the end I finally felt at home with the people I became friends with. It’s all about process. If you don’t appreciate the process, you won’t be appreciative of your results. That was my biggest takeaway from this year. Thank you to everyone who held me down and made my year more enjoyable <3

When I first sent out an email sharing my desire to be a part of this August Wilson Performance Lab, I had almost no confidence that I’d end up being in that room. If I could go back knowing everything I was going to experience, I would be shaking in my boots at the thought of not making it in. This process has been the biggest highlight of my artistic journey. I’ve never been in a room filled with people with such enthusiasm and high standards that changed my perspective on expectations. These artists are going to make it very far. Even though there were A LOT of struggles and stress in everyone’s personal lives, they still showed up and put their entire souls into their work. Watching from the background was a privilege. I got to see Ashanti work tirelessly with these actors to improve each moment of a scene and to teach us discipline in this work. I have changed so much these 10 weeks alone. I’ve met the most beautiful people I’ve ever known and learned so much from each and every one of them. @ashantibrwn taught me level headedness, @torlexciaa.dixon taught me how to connect with my spiritual side, @percidenise and @the.olivia.johnson taught me that I don’t need to suffer alone, @bby.girl_gk @josselyn_lee and Elijah, always made me feel seen, @rashadahmad4real and @chauncyver gave me confidence, @leonela_a03 taught me calmness, Manny taught me to be patient with myself, @wafflepox and @yo_itsmonty always made me feel like I belong in the space we built. I had never been a stage manager before this project, let alone had I ever worked a light board. I am beyond grateful that I got to pave my own path, make mistakes along the way (as there were many), yet I was able to learn, overcome, and improve. I reached out to my peers and professor and they all supported me to succeed and helped out where they could. This was a huge trust exercise with myself. Thank you all for putting your trust in me knowing I had never done this before, and even through the struggles did I still feel the safest in this space. I will forever cherish this time with you all and take what I learned onto the rest of my life’s work. I love this group dearly. 🫶🏽
