:LONG POST WARNING:

I have sat on this for so long as I couldn't find the words so bear with me as I bare my soul here. I am not the conventional beauty. On a scale of Quasimodo to a VS supermodel, I put myself solidly in the middle. I was never taught how to love and appreciate my body, just to tolerate it until it could be changed and changed again and when it was deemed beautiful by someone else's standards, THEN it was acceptable. I grew up in a time where fat shaming was the joke of the hour on every mainstream TV show. I was viewed through the hazy lenses of generational trauma, shown that even on days where I could feel pretty, I was never going to be beautiful. I was made to be hyperaware of the space I occupied, for better but usually worse

When I auditioned for the #curvetherunway show in 2018, I thought I was tiptoeing into the shallow end of the pool, testing the waters to see how it felt. I had NO idea that it was a leap of faith that would start the butterfly effect this #metamorphosis has become.

Cut to the present: on the other side of abuse, cPTSD, pandemic, loss, etc. I have been doing the work to change the narrative, clear my own lenses, and stop listening to the voices of so many nitpick away until I'm raw and exposed like nerves after a slight burn; enough to feel EVERYTHING. Our show photog @therealurban504photography reached out to do a photo shoot this last visit home. I had spoken the words out loud to myself that I wanted something to help me see myself the way my village tells me I am (a mouthful, I know). Because you know your village will be the first to build you up but also be the first to humble you also. So I agree to it and within 48 hours after that agreement, it's shoot time. I made a deal with Mother Nature regarding her storming that day and she obliged me because she knew I needed this shoot, raining when I didn't need to be out and stopping right before I needed to leave. Manny asked me how I was doing throughout and my response was always the same: "this is triggering but therapeutic".
