The reclusive Virginia Rail… full frame flight.

The flight was about 2 meters in length across the marsh, getting from one patch of grasses to another.

This reclusive Virginia Rail had two chicks it was foraging for so it briefly came out of the dense marsh grasses to hunt for insects and invertebrates.

Yellow-headed Blackbird

These Blackbirds are far outnumbered by the Red-Winged Blackbirds. But in the wetlands where they breed, west of the Cascades, they can bully their cousins to secure the best breeding locations in the marsh.

I’ve seen a handful of these beauties this summer. Stay tuned for more pics to follow…

Are Columbian White Tailed Deer bipeds? Nope…but they can be a bit rowdy.

FYI - The Columbian white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus leucurus) is a subspecies of white-tailed deer found in the Pacific Northwest, primarily in the lower Columbia River basin and the Umpqua Basin in Oregon and Washington. Once endangered due to habitat loss and overhunting, conservation efforts have led to modest recovery. The Columbia River population remains listed as threatened. They are distinguished by their long, brown-topped tail with a white underside, and antlers that branch from a single main beam.

Eat your fiber

This coyote had the right of way on this narrow trail, so I yielded but got a full frame head shot as it skittishly scooted by. It had just downed a rodent and had a bit of the prairie grass for dessert.

Rarified Air

Virginia Rails are secretive, reclusive birds of thickly vegetated wetlands. They rarely come out in the open and don’t generally fly but a few meters.
So, to not just see one (or two), but to get them in flight with protein for the growing chicks was icing on the cake.
