Goodbyes don’t get any easier the second time. They should always be a see you later, as my second mom has taught me. The first time I said goodbye to Adriana was when she was moving, and her mom made the point this isn’t goodbye, it is just see you later. But this one hurts more than most. From the day we met in first grade, Adriana has always pushed me to be my best, even if it’s for something small. Even when she moved to Georgia, we stayed close, and we “talked” on the phone for hours, or she did homework and I rambled on about nonsense, as she nodded along. If we weren’t on the phone, you could bet we were texting about anything, from the way we wanted to visit to the way we wanted to go home and nap. We had more than the bond of friends, we were sisters, and no distance could keep us apart. The plane rides felt natural when I knew who would be picking me up, even if it wasn’t her in the car, I was excited to see my second family. Words cannot express the type of person Adriana was, she went above and beyond for everything she did, putting herself into her community in so many ways that almost everyone knew her. Truly, this is not a goodbye, it is a see you later, and I will always have my second family, no matter the distance. by @kennedi.ost
