EDENBRIDGE AND OXTED SHOW

Spent a nice day on Saturday at the EDENBRIDGE and Oxted Agricultural show. Saw some amazing livestock and vegetables, but the main ring with the horsey events was the highlight.

There was two horse jumping competitions which were excellent viewing and of a high standard. Then there was the “Coaching and Four in Hand” (posh carriages) competition which was very elegant and the Double Harness Scurry championship, which was exciting to watch.

All in all a great day out. I had forgotten the Vintage Farm Machinery display that brought back memories of yesteryear on the Croft with the old Ferguson, Massey Ferguson and Fordson Dexta tractors.

Partial Eclipse 2026

Joined members of the Camera Club in Tonbridge to have a go at capturing the partial eclipse last night.

We were standing on the Bridge overlooking the Medway, which was an ideal spot and provided interesting foreground for the first image. The second image shows the various stages of the eclipse from the first “bite” by the moon, until it starts appearing on the other side of the sun.

You are never quite sure what you have captured, as it is so hard to see the back of the camera, whilst shading your eyes from the very bright light emanating from the sun. Without the solar glasses and filter on the camera it is a white blob! However, with the glasses etc an amazing image appears in the sky. In 2090, I will resolve not to take photos at the next Eclipse and just watch😂

Family and Friends Day at RAF Lossiemouth

My week up North, finished with photographing a different type of bird at RAF Lossiemouth. A great day out with an opportunity to get on board the Poseidon MRA 1, which is primarily used to track submarines and also seeing a display by four Typhoon jets with their immense power, speed and noise!
Their display of the Vertical take off was amazing as indeed was their roll of the aircraft. A seagull tried to keep up, and no photos taken in Lossie would be the same without them in the picture!!
As well as the displays there was great children’s entertainment and live music on the stage. It was a pity that it was a bit on the chilly side, but it did not diminish the enjoyment of the day.

Pine Martens and Squiz

It was great to see the Pine Martens return to the woodland managed by Jacqui and Paul at #pinemartenhidemoray and they have three kits, which sadly stayed hidden during my visit, which is also fantastic news. Of course you cannot resist to take a photo of the Red Squirrels whilst visiting the hide.

Ospreys in Aviemore

Made the annual pilgrimage to see Gordon and Ian at Aviemore Ospreys immediately after my visit to Bourne.

It has been a difficult season with the drought, the North Easterly winds and a horror of a new dominant Osprey who is hell bent on keeping the pond with its hundreds of trout to himself. The crazy thing is that he is an absolutely useless “fisherbird”. On the first day he had six dives and did not take one trout out of the pond even though he had one in his grasp/talons on three occasions. He is in the last three photos and he lost them all!!

On the second day, we drew a blank. No dives, no fish, which makes it a long morning having got up at 3:30am!!

The Gull had a great time sweeping up after him - need to order a red kite for next year Gordon😂😂

Anyway always good banter, great company with new people I had not met before.

Stayed at Sweeney Aviemore #2 which was brilliant and five minutes away from the pond. Fantastic restaurant called Delaneys within it.

Next stop Keith and Lossiemouth#

A Great Evening with the Barn Owls

Following on from the session with the Cuckoo chick, I got the opportunity to photograph a Barn Owl nest with six chicks, though only three came to the nest entrance.
I did not know beforehand that the Barn Owl lays up to six eggs at a 2-3 day interval, but starts to incubate them as soon as the first egg laid. For this reason after the incubation period of around a month they begin to hatch at three day intervals. The end result is by the time the last egg hatches the oldest chick is two weeks old, and therefore the chances of survival for the last one is quite low. However, in this nest all six made it.
I stayed up with them until 2am but had to call it a day to get some sleep before my drive at 7am from Lincoln to Aviemore! That was a pity as the parents were actively returning with food. #digitalcameramag

Cuckoo Chick with Reed Warbler Host taken in Bourne. Another fascinating couple of hours with a cuckoo chick who was 16 days old, and almost ready to fledge. Not much room left in the nest for it!
When they fledge they just drop to the ground and then climb up the nearest tree to a branch, which makes them vulnerable to predators.
This one had been ringed earlier in the morning as can be seen in the final photo. #digitalcameramag #appicoftheweek taken in Bourne by @kennymac2610

Gauntlet Birds of Prey Photography Competition 2026 Winner

I was very surprised to learn last weekend that two out of my three submissions into the Gauntlet Birds of Prey Photography Competition were short listed with judging taking place today.
I was even more surprised that the image of the male Goshawk weaving through the trees was announced the Winner of the Competition which was organised by #garyjoneswildlifephotography and kindly sponsored by #hawkeoptics and #cambrianphotouk

The portrait of the Red Kite was the other image that made it to the final shortlist.

I found out about the competition when I stopped at Gauntlet in Knutsford four weeks ago on my way to Scotland. Then, through sheer coincidence I was returning back to Sevenoaks today, having attended my lovely niece’s wedding in Oban on Friday, and stopped at Gauntlet to see the photos being judged.
Thanks to Hawke Optics I now possess a beautiful pair of binoculars!!I had admired them over the years as Gary Jones always uses them on photography workshops.

Gauntlet do great work in Africa to try and save the greatest eco warriors on the planet - the much maligned Vulture. These birds are sadly killed through poison administered by poachers of rhino and elephant ivory. The reason being that by the very fact that they circle high above a newly killed animal it gives the whereabouts of the poachers away to those who seek to stop them killing the animals for their tusks. If you happen to be on the M6 and are passing Knutsford it is worth stopping and visiting the centre. #digitalcameramag #appicoftheweek taken in Gauntlet Birds of Prey, Eagle & Vulture Park, Knutsford by @kennymac2610

THE FINAL POST
All of the 15k Images have now been reviewed and whilst most have still to be processed the number has been reduced to more manageable levels.

On the afternoon after seeing the King Vultures we were invited into the garden of one of the workers in the restaurant, as he had a Male Black Crested Coquette resident there. This bird is tiny, and rarely seen and is a tiny insect like hummingbird, with a fantastic punk hairstyle. We were honoured to see it and spent an hour with it.

After that, is the amazing Boat billed Heron with her chick, waving back at the camera!! Absolutely beautiful and sadly very few chicks survive as they fall off the branch and iguanas are waiting for them!!
The next ones with the fancy hairstyles are the male and female Currassow. Once again Instagram does not make it easy with its square format to fit the whole of the image into the post, which kind of spoils it.
They are followed by a White Hawk, Green IBIS, Fascinated Antshrike and an amazing butterfly!!

So that brings an end to the postings from this trip. It was fantastic and thanks to the six lovely ladies who were with me including #traceylundphotography who led the group, for making it a fun trip. taken in Costa Rica by @kennymac2610

DAY 8 PM
The Toucans

In the afternoon we had the opportunity of watching various birds coming onto the feeders that are outside every hotel and restaurant in rural Costa Rica.

There were two types of Toucans that came plus two types of Aracari, who are very similar to the Toucans.

The first two are the ones you really associate with Costa Rica and they are the Keel-Billed Toucans. The next two are the Yellow Throated Toucans, followed by the Collared Aracari and the Fiery Billed Aracari.
Which one is your favourite? Mine has to be the King-Billed Toucans.

All are stunning birds.

DAY 8 The King Vultures

I had never seen King Vultures before, and what impressive birds they are. They were happily mixing with the Black Vultures and actually helping them tear the meat apart.

Vultures are normally not the prettiest of birds. However they have a huge part to play in the eco system as they clean up all the carcasses when animals sadly die.

However, these King Vultures are actually very pretty! Their heads are magnificent, almost like a turkey, and the back of the head is clearly coloured to frighten other preying birds and animals.

You can see from a couple of the photos that some had really full crops, whilst others had just joined the party.

Really enjoyed being in their company and watching their interactions with each other and the smaller black vultures.

Day 7 MACAWS with an artistic twist!!

Now more than halfway through our trip, we arrived at a Finca where a lady had befriended a flock of wild MaCaws, half of which are Green coloured rather than the usual Red.

When we arrive we go to a field and she has a bucket of nuts and she shouts Lapa Lapa and they appear from nowhere.

I thought I would try out some artistic shots of them coming into land where the food is, rather than the usual portrait. Some worked, some maybe not!! As always Instagram has a problem of filling the image into its square format, so please excuse shots that look as if they are cropped.
