Recently I did my own odyssey back to Indonesia after 8 years of not being back home. I needed to make a sentimental post after seeing how much my country has changed. Being back home made me realize where my home truly is. Never realized how much of a struggle it is for me to live in the Netherlands. I miss my people, my culture, my family, my friends, just the way of living. I was so blinded by trauma and fear to realize how beautiful my country is.

For once I was reminded of what it felt like to be treated as a human being, unlike here where I’m just seen as a case number and incapable of doing anything just because of the color of my skin and the passport I hold. I have never felt so free and appreciated by everyone around me in Indonesia. As I’m writing this post, lowkey I feel a bit cringe cause it’s kind of giving Eat, Pray, Love, going back home to find myself, but I think I can only ever be myself truly in the places I call home, Bintaro, Jakarta, and Bandung.

I am still very critical of the politics back in Indonesia and the injustices that are happening in my country, however my heart will always belong to the motherland. The soil in which I was born, raised, learned my first words, learn how to interact with people, and navigate the world. I love my culture and my people so much, I have realized I want to die in the place in which I was born. I hope to be back in Indonesia sooner, and not have to wait for another 8 or more years to be able to set foot back in the place I have called and will always call home.

Indonesia, I have grown to appreciate and love you for everything you have taught me and given me. Till we meet again, one day I will be back home. ❤️🇮🇩 taken in Jakarta, Indonesia by @kennytalogo
