Kensington Voice’s Emily Rizzo attended the Kensington Neighborhood Wellness Court for about six months, and tracked the journeys of 87 participants.

She saw people in the throes of addiction who were arrested Wednesday mornings for low-level offenses, like obstructing the sidewalk, and taken to court the same-day.

Standing before a judge, some so sick they couldn’t stand, participants chose whether they wanted to be diverted to treatment or have a trial that day. Most who were eligible chose to get help. But the city lost contact with 67% of them, and they received Wellness Court bench warrants.

Opponents argue it’s ineffective to use policeas points of entry to services for people who are in the throes of addiction and not voluntarily seeking help.

Jung died from diabetic ketoacidosis in November, 2023, at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. Experts testified to “systemic” lapses in jail care, including for emergency responses and diabetes.

At least 100 students, parents, teachers and staff rallied against the closure of Stetson Middle School last week. It’s one of five schools in the Kensington area the district wants to close as part of its citywide reorganization plan.

On Thursday, a district official admitted the district has neglected the building for “decades,” while educators question the district’s data and scoring of the school’s capacity.

Ashley Jenkins has had three sons go through Conwell Middle School, and she plans to send her 2-year-old there as well. But the Philly School District plans to close both Conwell and Stetson middle schools in Kensington. Parents, educators, and city council members are pushing back. Jenkins said it’s more than a school, but a community pillar.

Recent investments into Conwell and the school’s rankings also raises questions about the district’s decision making.
