“The Butterfly Effect” - mixed media

Texas A&M University Engineering Art Competition Piece - 150 Years of Impact: Shaping Texas A&M’s Legacy

butterfly effect; n. /ˈbədərˌflī əˈfekt/: a property of chaotic systems by which seemingly small, insignificant changes may completely reshape the trajectory of the system.

Legacy is not simply inherited; it is built by the choices we make. A small, simple idea can grow into something far beyond its origins, shaping a future that extends past ourselves.

Inspired by the mathematical progression of the Fibonacci sequence, the butterflies in “The Butterfly Effect” grow larger and the wings, or hands in this case, reach further. Beginning in a protective, inward posture and ending in a gesture of reaching outward, the progression of the hands symbolizes individual growth and our ability to shape our own futures. Even the media chosen for this piece reflects the idea of building your own legacy; each layer of graphite builds on the last to create depth and form.

Our legacies are not predetermined, and neither is that of Texas A&M University. Small decisions and persistent effort have shaped Texas A&M University’s legacy over the past 150 years, and each successive generation will continue to build upon the solid foundation built by the Aggies before us.

Thanks and Gig ‘Em🦋

back with a lil 70 minute drawing 🔭🌌🌙

i wanted to use this as a chance to practice; a) drawing laufey, b) utilizing lighting, and c) testing my perfectionism.

throughout this process i didn’t let myself erase anything after the sketch - all of the rendering is done on one layer and the background on another. this was a quick piece, but that was to keep me from looking at it for too long and letting the desire to “correct” imperfections get the best of me. flaws are what make us human, and i’m learning to love them.

anyways, i’m really happy with how this drawing came out and i hope yall like it too! love u
