This #WorldVegetarianDay I’m hoping this message hits your heart strings and inspires you to choose meals that don’t include animals 🐮🐷🐣🐟

“Farm animals are far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined and, despite having been bred as domestic slaves, they are individual beings in their own right. As such they deserve our respect. And our help. Who will plead for them if we are silent?” - Jane Goodall 🤍 Rest in Peace 🤍

Dogs sniff and pee on each other’s pee like it’s the neighborhood newsletter — catching up on who’s single, who’s new, and who’s been eating too many treats. It’s not gross… it’s science. 🐶

Fun fact: Dog pee contains a cocktail of chemical messages that reveal everything from sex, age, and emotional state to social status. Sniffing it is like reading a full profile. Marking over it? That’s basically replying, “cool story, but I’m the main character.” taken in Paia, Hawaii by @keonistuff

Why do dogs greet you with shoes in their mouths?? 👞👟🥾🥿👡 according to research 👩🏼‍🏫

1️⃣ It’s a Greeting Ritual (Appeasement Behavior)

Dogs are social animals, and bringing an object—like a shoe—is often a form of appeasement or excitement display. It can be their way of saying: “I’m so happy you’re back, and I’m not a threat!” This behavior is especially common in dogs with soft temperaments or those bred for retrieval.

Supporting research: Studies on canine body language and greeting behaviors (e.g., by Dr. Patricia McConnell, an applied animal behaviorist) describe this as an appeasement gesture—a form of friendly intent.

2️⃣ Retrieving Instinct

For retriever breeds (like Golden Retrievers or Labradors), the behavior may be instinctual. They’re hardwired to pick up and carry things, so grabbing a shoe can be a way to fulfill that drive when they’re excited.

Fun fact: Even non-retriever breeds may mimic this behavior because it’s been reinforced—e.g., you laugh, pet them, or give attention when they do it.

3️⃣ Seeking Attention or Interaction

Your shoe carries your scent, which is comforting. Bringing it to you may also be a learned behavior that results in a positive interaction. Dogs often learn that carrying a shoe leads to affection, laughter, or a game of chase.

4️⃣ Displacement Behavior

In situations where a dog feels excitement but doesn’t know how to express it, they may engage in what’s called displacement behavior—like grabbing a shoe to “do something” with all that energy. by @keonistuff
