What is something you truly want that you’re afraid to actually have?

Not afraid you won’t get it. Afraid you will.

The fear of getting what we want is rarely about the thing itself. It is usually about who we would have to become to hold it. The version of you who has the relationship, the success, the visibility, the rest, has to let go of the version who stayed safe by wanting from a distance.

Sometimes it’s loyalty. If no one before you got to have this, having it can feel like leaving them behind. Sometimes it’s an old belief that good things get taken away, so it feels safer never to fully arrive.

Jungians call this the golden shadow. It’s not only the dark parts we hide but the bright ones too: the desires and gifts we disown because they feel too big, too much, or not ours to claim.

This week, sit with the question. Write down the first answer that comes up, especially the one that makes you squirm.

If this landed somewhere deep, that’s the work we do at Sunray. Start with a free 15-minute connection call at sunraypsychotherapy.com.

Resilience is rarely about being tough. It is usually about being the one who decided the pattern stops here.

Some of us didn’t choose resilience as a personality trait. It chose us. When you’re the first in your family to name what happened, to feel what others had to bury just to survive, you inherit a strange kind of job description. You become the bridge between what was carried and what can finally be set down.

That role asks a lot. It asks you to hold compassion for the people who came before you while refusing to repeat what they couldn’t help but pass on. It asks you to stay steady when old grief surfaces in places you didn’t expect. And it asks you to keep going on the days you wonder why it had to be you.

Here’s what I want you to know. Resilience isn’t the same as never breaking. It’s the capacity to return to yourself, again and again, and to let that return be supported. The ones who repair generational wounds don’t do it alone, and they shouldn’t have to.

If you’re the one in your lineage doing this work, your exhaustion makes sense. So does your strength. Both are real.

Honestly, I’m tired of seeing inauthentic representations of Shadow and Shadow work.

Shadow work in Jungian psychotherapy is not “let’s do Shadow work today.” There is no formula. There is no phased protocol. It is woven in throughout the sessions.

We pay special attention to the repressed emotions, to the things people were told they were not allowed to be, and not allowed to FEEL.

At Sunray Psychotherapy, we walk with clients through their ongoing individuation process. We listen to the voice of the Ego. We notice the presentations of the Persona. And in between the lines, we see the Shadow parts emerge.

That’s the work. That’s the transformation. That’s the integration of the totality of who you are, your true, authentic Self.

The scars have since faded, but the message of my strength is still there. #storytime #trauma #bigcats #therapy #therapist by @keren.k.goldenberg

You look fine on paper. You’re capable, accomplished, the one everyone leans on. So why does it feel so heavy inside?

At Sunray Psychotherapy, we work with what sits beneath the surface. Here’s where we focus:

Complex Trauma
When the hurt wasn’t one event but a climate you grew up in, we help you understand how it shaped you and finally let it settle.

Intergenerational Trauma
Some of what you carry started long before you were born, and therapy is where you get to decide what continues with you and what stops here.

High Achievers
Ambition is not the problem; we help you keep your drive while losing the anxiety and self-pressure that have been powering it.

Stress and Burnout
Burnout is rarely about working too hard. It is usually about years of ignoring what you actually need.

Grief and Loss
Whether the loss is a person, a relationship, or a version of your life you expected, we make room for grief that hasn’t had anywhere to go.

Complex Family Dynamics
We help you understand the roles you learned at home so you can show up as yourself, not the old script.

Cultural Identity and Antisemitism
For immigrants, multicultural families, and Jewish clients, we offer a space where your history and identity are understood, not explained away.

We’re a Jewish, immigrant, woman-owned practice, and our therapists have been there too. We blend depth psychology, Jungian work, and EMDR so you get more than insight. You get real change.

In person in Valley Village and Santa Ana, and virtual across CA, FL, VA, and ID. Therapy available in English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese.

I used to HATE it when someone told me to “just breathe.”

In my head I’d be thinking: what the f**k is breathing going to do for me right now?? My problem is still my problem. Breathing isn’t going to pay the bill, fix the fight, or make the email disappear.

And honestly? I was right. Breathing doesn’t fix the situation. It isn’t even really about getting you through the moment.

It took me years (and a lot of clinical training) to understand what it actually does. Breathing is rarely about the problem. It is usually about your nervous system.

When we’re stressed, our breathing gets fast and shallow without us noticing. We start blowing off too much carbon dioxide, and that actually tightens the blood vessels in the brain and reduces blood flow to it. Translation: the moment you most need your thinking brain is the moment your body quietly makes it harder to reach.

Slow, longer exhales tell your body something different. They activate the parasympathetic side of your nervous system, the part responsible for settling. Research backs this up: a 2022 meta-analysis found slow breathing increases heart rate variability, a marker of that calmer, more regulated state. And a 2023 Stanford study found that just five minutes a day of breathing with extended exhales improved mood and lowered physiological arousal, even more than mindfulness meditation did.

So no, your breath won’t solve the problem. But it brings your body back online, so you can.

Try it: two short inhales through the nose, then one long, slow exhale through the mouth. Repeat for a minute or two. Then go deal with the thing.

Turning up, inwards, out, towards empowerment, on a Tuesday?? Um. YA!

Join us for an intimate and empowering discussion exploring women’s empowerment through health and wellness. Together, we’ll engage in deep, real conversations about the gifts of being a woman—and the challenges of navigating careers, relationships, family, and everyday life while maintaining our mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

In a society where women are often expected to do it all, and sometimes with very little support, many quietly carry their struggles while maintaining the image of being strong and capable. Fear of judgment, shame, or appearing vulnerable can make it difficult to speak openly, even as the pressure and pain continue to build beneath the surface. Whether you can relate to this experience or have found support, strength, and wisdom you’d like to share, this conversation is for you.

Myself & the other panelists will bring our professional perspectives to the conversation while shining a light on the power of the feminine and creating space for honest dialogue. This will not be a traditional panel—we invite you, the audience, to be part of the conversation through questions, reflections, and shared experiences.

THIS TUESDAY. Oct 20th 4:30pm. Link in bio! #thingstodoinla #womanspanel #beverlyhills #sunraypsychotherapy #empowerment by @keren.k.goldenberg

Wounds will get activated, history gets repeated-but we can change our relationship to the activation, when we know what and why is actually coming up.

Compliments are sweet, but they usually land on the outside. Your hair, your outfit, your glow. They notice how you look.

Appreciation lands somewhere else. It sees who you are and what you bring. The way you show up when it counts. How you make a hard conversation feel safe. The care you put into things nobody asked you to care about.

I can tell you look great today. I can also tell you that the way you listened last night changed something for me. The first one feels good for an hour. The second one stays with you for years.

Wanting to be appreciated is rarely about needing praise. It is usually about needing to be seen. A lot of high achievers grew up getting compliments on the surface stuff: grades, looks, accomplishments. Very few were told what their presence actually meant to someone. So we hunger for value and settle for applause.

This week, try going one layer deeper. Instead of “you look amazing,” say “I value how you ___.” Watch what it does to them, and to you.

Who in your life deserves to hear what you value about them? Tag them below.

Lonely in a full life? It is often not about the people. It is about how much of you stays unspoken behind the role.
