POSTS STORIES REELS

I did promised a couple of weeks back that I’d tell you about the debate around this image in the live judging of the Australian Photographic Prize documentary category, in which it received gold and was ultimately winner.

In terms of composition, it breaks the rules. The main element – the tattooed man is in the middle of the frame, not in a third as the rule of thirds composition theory suggests it should be.

In addition, though he is the main element of the picture he is blurred. This is because he is moving toward me and because I am using a wide-angle lens which doesn’t focus particularly sharply really up close.

Perhaps the most common way to shoot it would be to have the background elements blurred and the main subject in sharp focus.

Luckily, some the judges would see that in this case, that stereotypical composition would not work as well as this one.

This one reflects the scene – busy, moving and unpredictable so if we are talking about documentary and/or narrative photography (telling the story), this composition works best.

What do you think?

Earthship Freo (2019).

Earthship Freo was a squatter community of nine homes at the intersection of High Street and Stirling Highway. The properties had been purchased by Main Road to be demolished for widening the road – a main transport route to Fremantle City and the Harbour.

The houses became the centre of an activist movement determined to save endangered Tuart trees that lined the road, morphing into a community of artists, backpackers and musicians living largely off-grid (there was no power or water) and largely sustainably.

This was taken at the 'party house'.

Zoran. I was lucky to photograph the last few weeks of Earthship Freo in 2019. It was a squatter activist community living across nine abandoned houses earmarked for demolition for road widening in Fremantle, Western Australia. Zoran lived there and I bump into him still from time to time mostly at the Ashram. It makes my day.

Jarrah. Does anyone in Perth remember Earthship Freo? I was lucky enough to capture it in its final days, before the homes were bulldozed to make way for the highway widening and I've never really shared the images; until now. Stay tuned for more Earthship Freo.

Peace. ☮ Perth protests against Land Forces weapons exhibition. Tough choice this one, between this beautiful colour and the black and white. But you know, I'm leaning toward the black and white because without the distraction of colour, their wild eyes really stand out. Thoughts? Black and white or colour?
