Welp. I started a @substack

It’s about art, design, travel, but mostly life…

My first post is about how AI won’t be the end of free thought if we continue to take risks, experiment and challenge convention like the great midcentury designer Russel Wright did with his home, Manitoga aka Dragon Rock outside NYC. I had the chance to visit last fall and talk all about this and more over on my Substack post.

I would love it if you read it and followed along on this journey!

Here is to slowing down and getting out of the Meta-verse one small action at a time.

KVD will be *CLOSED FRIDAY* in solidarity with the atrocities taking place in Minnesota and the immigrant communities across our country being terrorized by our government.

Los Angeles is one of the great cities of the world and it is great BECAUSE of its immigrants. This country would not exist without immigrants. I am half Peruvian and the child of an immigrant. I would not exist without immigration, none of us would.

We are all immigrants.

Join me in participating in the general strike -
No work
No school
No shopping
No social media

Human dignity, safety and justice for ALL.

None of us is free until all of us are free.

On this first day of Spring I am wishing everyone a gentle shift into the new season like the cool muted “Road to Todo Santos” green from @backdrop we painted the entry and flourishing new growth like the plants from @plantsandspaces in the foyer of the redesigned offices @ninjatune 🌱🌱🌱

Here is a sneak peek of the office refresh we did for one of my all time favorite clients @ninjatune

They first came to me in 2018 to help them furnish their office on a shoestring budget. They wanted it to feel young, fresh and professional. Swipe to see the raw space and our original design. ——->

Six years later, post pandemic, they reached out again asking for a refresh to make the office feel more luxe, grown up, and a little softer around the edges.

I was thrilled. I leaned into the earth tones all around us in LA, selected sumptuous, tactile fabrics like boucle and velvet, found curvaceous furniture with rounded edges, and prioritized natural materials and plants.

We wanted the space to feel warm, luxurious and intentional. A place to create and linger. Ideally even one that might spark new ideas and music we all want to listen to.

Sometimes all any of us need is a little refresh. ✨✨

Hello and welcome to 2025 three months in, almost Spring already. What a wild ride it’s been. For those of you that recently started following me I wanted to introduce myself and for those of you who have been here since the beginning I wanted to show proof of life.

I am an Interior Designer based in Los Angeles and have called LA my home for over 15 years. In a city that was already reeling from the Writers and SAG strikes it broke my heart to watch my beautiful city brought to its knees by the wildfires in January.

Friends, colleagues and clients saw everything they loved burned down before their eyes. It was apocalyptic. Something I would not wish anyone to experience. I was extremely fortunate that my home was safe but none of us were left unscathed from this devastation.

Thank you to everyone who reached out to check on me and make sure I was okay. And thank you to everyone who donated their time, money and love to those in need. To witness how this city came together restored my faith in humanity at a time where I have felt rocked to my core. Asking questions like, should I stay in LA? Should I stay in this country? What now?

My answer is now more than ever is the time to lean into this amazing community. I am so incredibly grateful to call myself an Angeleno and part of the Los Angeles design community. I have full faith that we will rebuild a better and brighter future together. We are stronger together.

Thank you for being part of my community! I cannot wait to see how we rise from these ashes. Here is to Spring and sunnier days ahead.

I 🤍 Los Angeles

The folks over @archdigest asked me and several other @archdigestpro designers to weigh in on how to tastefully buy into trends without selling out. My advice? Don’t. Just kidding (sort of) but I do recommend expanding your references when thinking about your next design project. Go to a new art exhibition in your town, scour old design and art books and of course, travel, travel, travel.

I just came back from a week in NYC and the Hudson Valley where I got to tour one of my most favorite designers studios @studiogiancarlovalle then got to stay @hotelkinsley designed by the incredibly talented @studiorobertmckinley as well as the evocative @themakerhotel in Hudson and even took in the @workstead designed restaurant and bar @rivertownhudson and came back beyond inspired for all my projects including one in the Hudson Valley!

So my advice when following trends? Seek inspiration in potentially unexpected places and sometimes that may be a physical place! Read more at the link in our bio 👆🏼 taken in New York, New York by @kerryvasquezdesign

It’s a grey day in Los Angeles so of course I’m thinking about COLOR and how powerful it can be. Take for example “the blue room” from our Maximalist Minimalist project. White minimalist walls, blue @calvinklein rug, tomato 🍅 orange side tables from @bludot and shades of blue bedding compliment the light sculpture installation from @nanoleaf that you can change based on your mood or the weather. I couldn’t decide on a favorite so I figured I would post them all. Which is your favorite combo?

Another renovation PSA***
Less is always more in this minimalists opinion. Please excuse the iPhone photos but I wanted to share this incredible transformation from our Hudson Valley project that is still midway through but look at the difference already! Just took clarity of vision, new paint, new floors, a little elbow grease, et voila! A space that feels brand new. Renovation doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg but it does require knowing what you want and the best way to accomplish that. *mood* The rain in LA has got me feeling like the lady in this @lukegilford photo we used in our Paris Meets LA project…le sigh…spring will be here soon right? Artwork is one of the hardest parts of my job because I find it to be the most personal part of the process. I always encourage clients to take their time and select pieces that they love and are meaningful to them. It is what completes a space and ties everything together. Lucky for me this client had excellent and evocative taste and this artwork elevated the entire design.

*layering neutrals* layering neutrals is not easy. It can leave a room feeling bland and lifeless.

My rules for bringing life into a room while layering neutrals, like we did in the Living Room of our Topanga Modern project, is to focus on using natural materials and texture, texture, texture.

We started with a few key pieces - the sculptural Minotaur chair from @pierre_augustin_rose in a sumptuous ivory boucle from @lamaisonpierrefrey and the custom wabi-sabi inspired reclaimed wood coffee table from @bkdomestic then we found the beyond gorgeous rug from @armadilloandco the reclaimed wood beam for the mantle and a custom @portolapaints Roman clay for the fireplace wall and that is how you create a warm yet neutral space!
