Jake and I brought a vending machine here to stock hundreds of unique art pieces that attendees can purchase- all mystery style!

I write to you from @kbirdbar , on 14th and P in DC, where moments ago National Guard walked by outside. I’m so struck by the juxtaposition: last Thursday, during our Pups on the Patio Happy Hour — a 400 person protest walked by, drowning out all other conversation. People are afraid, people are aching, people are showing up, and making noise, people are saying no more, and people are retreating from one another.

I’m sitting with the question: what is it to steward a space in DC, in this moment?

I opened a bar to dive into the question of how we bring community work to the unusual players: the folks who care, but who haven’t been invited to imagine, who might not ever show up to the equity seminar, but who give a damn, even without the language for it.

A few weeks ago, on a particularly low day, I asked my brother how he built his business, and his answer: keep showing up. Keep showing up.

There’s so much to be actualized: we are still learning how to be a space that feels connective and like a haven for those that need it most.

Our sales are down this month, and it’s my job to care about that — but in many ways it’s also the least of my worries.

The things I am worried about: my immigrant neighbors, and friends. How well our government has done pitting us against each other, as if the abuse of power isn’t the real problem. How limited our imagination for a community where all can flourish. We are a country with enough resources to go around.

I don’t have much more here- no big solutions. Just a commitment to keep showing up with a belief that it doesn’t have to be this way. With a willingness to act in order to make it so.

Another world is possible.

It has been 15 months, and we now have a place to call home.

There’s so much I want to remember about this first week — how friends came to stay, and filled the place with laughter. How they didn’t mind that we only had hand towels for them after their shower, how we assured them that we do indeed have full size towels, and they should be unpacked next time they visit.

How surreal it was to find things we packed away last March — desperate to save what we could while we were forced to throw away the rest. God that was awful, and it’s not the truest thing anymore. Hallelujah.

How excited I was to wash dishes. I don’t think this will last, but for now — I love the sink. I love our dishes. I can’t get enough.

All the little new details we hope will become norm: like frogs on the glass door, like the sound of children playing outside, like tiger lilies blooming.

I have a friend who told me that he thinks about homes not as things to own, but as things to steward. 15 months since our last home, and now, a new one: I end the day with gratitude for those who stewarded this space before us, and I commit to stewarding it while it’s mine.
