Fallout (2024) ☢️
In the games we remember the iconic line "war..... War never changes" but in the show we remember "okie dokie" and I never want that to change 😂
The last few games we had were huge open world stories set in the post nuclear wasteland of any part of America, although the earlier games started out as isometric RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Diablo.
Like many of us my first game of the franchise was Fallout 3 and it was so much fun, bonkers, surreal and for some reason Liam Neeson was our father 🤔 but did the show itself bring the same amount of craziness? Let's see...
My review, the good: the show establishes the life of the vault dwellers that have lived underground for a long time within fallout shelters which I found to be insightful, they show plenty of the oddities that exist outside in the wasteland including its amount of oddball people, and yes they managed to make it as fun as the games if not more dramatic in terms of its characters, also just as bloody with cartoonish violence.
All of the characters are interesting with their own journey, their own quirks and badassery, even the villain characters have their charm.
The bad: not as buggy and as glitchy as the games 😂 kidding of course, I didn't find anything to be bad or out of place, I've only ever played 3 of the games, I never quite delved in to understand the accuracy of the lore, but I do know that it is set within the chronological timeline rather than based on a singular game.
All in all I love this show and I am looking forward to season 3, my overall score is 9 out of 10.

Twisted Metal (2023) 🤡🚗🚘
No one can forget the franchise that popularised vehicular combat alongside Vigilante 8.
Twisted Metal was crazy, fun and epic filled with psychotic characters and a mysterious being that grant wishes if you win, it took a while for an adaptation and back in 2023 we finally got one with currently 2 seasons with a 3rd in development, how did it go?
My review, the good: the lead characters do such a great job of being their dumbfounded and goofy selves, I am one to say whilst season 1 wasn't the strongest I can appreciate the world building aspect and the introduction of characters that will become huge in the future, season 2 however is how the games went, full on vehicular tournament which was done so well.
The music choices are mixed, but they somehow work, some of it used to demonstrate the naive worldview the lead character has.
The comedic tone was done well albeit a little cartoons, but that's also part of the show's charm.
The bad: not much in the bad department I'm afraid, the show isn't perfect, but it wasn't terrible, it's just dumb turn-your-brain-off fun 😊
Overall score: 8 out of 10.

The Last Of Us (2023) 🍄‍🟫🧟‍♂️
This franchise needs no introduction, but I will do it anyway: The Last Of Us is a cinematic survival horror set in the post apocalyptic universe where a fungal virus known as the Cordyceps has pretty much zombified the world, the games are played from the perspective of Joel, a hardened scavenger and Ellie, a young girl who is the more important part of the storyline as she is immune to the virus, both games were adapted into a series by HBO, I'm from the UK so I watched this through Sky TV at the time, so did this show work? Let's find out.
My review, the good: Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey play the leads very well, with Bella being fresh from Game Of Thrones not that long ago, Pedro has already established his place in the movie industry and has since then kept surprising us with amazing roles, I liked that they did their best to replicate the iconic moments from the games albeit a little differently, but the opening moments were made very well.
What I loved more is that they had the voice actors from the games play some roles in the show, for example Ellie's original VA Ashley Johnson portrays Ellie's mother, which makes perfect sense.
Both seasons also included some original scenes and original characters that weren't in the games, yet they somehow worked really well with the continuity.
The bad: the bad is mostly for season 2, I had no issues with the casting like most anti-woke losers, but I do wish they were as fleshed out as they were in the games, another criticism I had was the pacing, it felt like they were rushing to get to the memorable moments so the journey points and the conversations that bonded the characters were not there unfortunately, on the topic of characters: there were less characters than they were in the games, I assume it was either down to the budgeting or the time restraints which is understandable.
Season 3 is currently being made, but as much as I would like to watch they made some decisions that I have no agreement with at all.
Overall I give the show a 7 out of 10, some scenes could have been done better, but they did well with what they had.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022) 🤖👾
I am so glad that I can finally write about this, I think many others may too because this show is legitimately legendary.
For context: the game in which this comes from (Cyberpunk 2077) was broken at launch, bit by bit they made it better and better, but in its 3rd year this show was released and for quite some time it rekindled more appreciation for the game itself, but as for the show itself....... Let's dive in!
My review, the good: somehow this is just as brutal, just as cruel, just as vibrant as the game, show you Night City at it's best and at it's worst, it delved deeper into the lore, especially the Cyberpsychosis that happens in the game.
Each of the characters had their story to tell and they were very interesting characters, the writers knew how to make you love these characters and at the same time knew how to rip your heart out in every possible shock.
The music was unbelievably well made and they pulled the heartstrings perfectly.
What amazes me is that fans have made their character builds in the game based on these characters, such as the cybernetics, the skills and how much ram to build up to.
The bad: you won't believe this..... There is nothing bad at all, unless you can count how much a ton of scenes hurt your feelings then I guess you can say that's bad 😂 but seriously if there is one thing I can say that proves how amazing this is... is the cosplay community: there are a ton of amazing cosplays of this, it somehow became bigger and bigger and I don't think the writers knew how popular this show would be, so popular in fact that a new season comes out this year with new characters..... Do not get attached!!!!
Overall score: 10 out of 10.

Arcane: League Of Legends (2021) ⚙️⚙️
Of course I was gonna include this banger 👊 I need to preface this saying I've never played the game nor any of the related spinoffs so I can't really confirm it's lore accuracy, but I have seen people play it, I've seen the in universe band videos by K/DA which to this day is still a popular cosplay choice, with all that out of the way let's review.
My review, the good: the voice acting was phenomenal, Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell were brilliant choices for the main leads, the soundtrack was used in all of the right moments including Linkin Park, the environments were pure art and the animation was something special that I cannot put into words.
Every emotional moment in the show landed where it landed and it didn't disappoint.
The bad: the only bad was in season 2, but it's a minor thing, the pacing in season 2 felt like they tried to finish the story a bit sooner in my opinion, that's the only thing really.
Overall this was one of the few shows that had potential to break the 'video game to movie/tv' curse, it was insanely popular and won a ton of awards.
Overall score: 9 out of 10.

Sonic X (2003) 🦔
Ok this will be THE last time that I will post a review of a Sonic animated series I swear 😂 this particular one draws storylines from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and is a Japanese animation.
My review, the good: I loved how stunning the animation was and how colourful it was, they featured all of the Adventure 1 and 2 characters including an original human lead character (which the show focuses more on).
In fact this makes me wish that the Sonic Adventure games made a comeback.
The bad: unfortunately there are pacing and continuity issues, mainly when they do try to adapt the same scenes from the games they unfortunately skip the more important stuff and certain characters being pushed aside without their spotlight and time to shine, despite the show being named Sonic, the show seems to focus on the human lead, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion, but I wish they gave him a more interesting plotline, this could also be down to the English dubbing as some dialogue changes are often made without any consultation.
They did try what they could with the information and the lore given to them, but it was at the time one of the better adaptations of Sonic before the movies existed.
Overall score: 7 out of 10.

Pokémon (1997) 🐿️🐹
Would you believe that this is still going on even today!? Seemed only yesterday that the trading cards were popular and the theme tune staying stuck in our heads, I know you all sang it religiously, don't lie! 😂 Even now they have soooo many arcs, movies and spin offs like you wouldn't believe, I talked about the Detective Pikachu movie not long ago, but this will focus on the show in which the primary protagonist is Ash Ketchum.
My review, the good: Pikachu is way too adorable and they show how caring he is throughout the show and the bond he and Ash share, Ash is joined by companions who were originally Gym Bosses in the games (Brock and Misty) and they are fleshed out really well, the Team Rocket characters (Jesse and James) are fantastic additions being primary villains in the first 25 seasons (I know right?) and they have new storylines each time and it's never boring.
The bad: there isn't much bad, but my problem is I have yet to catch up 😂 so many damn seasons!!!! I have only ever watched the Indigo League season and the movie featuring MewTwo , and yes we've all shed tears that day 😭
But saying that though my overall score is 10 out of 10.

Sonic Underground (1999) 🦔
Oh look, another Sonic series post already? Well in my defence I nearly forgot this one too 😂 a dark sequel to the original cartoon series, but this one is what established Sonics love for chilli dogs 🌭
This one definitely felt more like a huge rebellion arc and they surprisingly did it well.
My review, the good: the music is just as catchy, they've established a much different origin for this new arc, it lasted around 40 episodes which means there weren't any major breaks.
The bad: sadly this one did not hit the mark as well as the previous cartoons, the storylines were maybe too complicated for me back when I was kid, repeat watching years later it still did make sense eventually, but I don't think it helped when there were too many characters to write arcs for.
Despite that it was a good effort, but it did receive cult status and the chilli dog thing definitely caught on since they were used for the second movie.
Overall score: 6 out of 10

Earthworm Jim (1995) 🪱🛸
Welcome to absurd territory, just as mental as the video games themselves, to give you an idea of the video game insanity: there seems to be a falling cow involved, his love interest is literally named 'Princess Whats-her-name' whose mother is named 'Queen Slug-For-A-Butt'...... Honestly it was almost ahead of its time, but this post is about the TV show...
My review, the good: the characters from the games are more fleshed out beyond mere appearances and boss fights, the humour reminds me a lot of the Ren & Stimpy cartoons and many different Nickelodeon classics, Earthworm Jim being voiced by Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta) is always a plus, it's almost funny when someone gets flattened by a falling cow at the end of some episodes which mirrored the games original ending.
Unfortunately once again I have to leave out the bad because there wasn't much bad about it other than it's short run time, if there was anything bad it will no doubt be by design considering this was a heavy parody of cartoon shows, and they chose a great template for it.
Overall a 9 out of 10, bring back the games as a collection 😂 even though they were difficult as hell.

Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog (1993) 🦔
I won't lie.... I think I enjoyed this one a bit too much 😂
The very first television media of the blue hedgehog and it ran for 2 seasons until its cancellation, despite that it received a cult status. Plus Sonic was voiced by Jaleel White who you may recognise as Steve Urkel in the sitcom Family Matters (did I dooo thaaaaat!?)
My review, the good: I liked the freedom fighter dynamic they have as it seems to fit Sonics role in the older games when he rescued animals from the containment units after the boss fights, probably one of the few cartoons that has aged very well I think.
The bad: there isn't really much bad I can say other than the fact it was cancelled, but a year later there was another Sonic show, whilst it was a very similar premise it was indeed a lot more darker than this one, I won't get into it much as I've not seen much of it unfortunately, but I heard rather good things though.
Overall score: 7 out of 10.

The Super Mario Bros Super Show (1989) 🍄
Now we're doing TV shows based on video games.
You're wondering "why is the Legend Of Zelda cartoon featured in this post?" Quite simple really, they were both in the same show.
For those who were born way later in life: this was an almost daily cartoon show with live action segments similar to a sitcom, however on Fridays they had The Legend Of Zelda cartoons, which was also known for it's memorable line "excuuuse me, princess! (I swear if they don't do this in the live action i will be disappointed 😂)
My review, the good: whilst this isn't the first video game based cartoon ever made it was most definitely my first, I loved Mario a lot as a kid and I probably still do, they had fun adventures and a catchy theme tune which was also used in the movie in 2023, the Zelda cartoons however were just as fun, it was nice seeing them playing out their adventures and seeing the villains shine too.
It unfortunately got cancelled for not being their own show so it only lasted 13 episodes.
The bad: watching these years later I realised that whilst the humour and animation were a little too slapstick heavy, Link unfortunately had the misfortune of his writing making him seem like a perverted weirdo, I don't think the writing of the dialogue is worth noting since it was mainly targeted to kids, but it wasn't written well at all, with a bit more time and more effort I think this would have been timeless hits.
I think you can catch these on some streaming services now, mainly Amazon, but I haven't felt the desire to pop back to it.
Overall score: 6 out of 10.
