FABULOUS AS ALWAYS 🌈 Another great Gay Pride month capped off by walking with @iatse representing the artsy folks of Local 52. One of the best parts of the parade is not only meeting the talent queer sisters, brothers, and others within our union but also seeing the families, particularly parents out in support of their children. We are in an era where young folk feel comfortable enough to live as their authentic selves unlike any other era in history yet their are still countless families and communities where that isn’t the case and coming out comes with a risk of being cast out of one’s home. I am so blessed to have the support of my family, my friends, and my amazing filmmaking community. You are so loved, it gets so much better, in fact, life is better now than it’s ever been. One of the worst things about living on the opposite side of the country is that every visit home is separated by months, and as anyone with little folks scampering around can attest, each of those months might as well be another year when it comes to watching them grow right before our eyes. I can’t go back for the milestones that I’ve missed, every noteworthy “first,” each funny sentence that further illustrates how inside that perfect little head is a developing personality, but that doesn’t mean I still can’t selfishly wish not that you would stop growing, but maybe you could just slow down for a sec for me to catch up. I never thought I’d care for children; I was quite happy being the fabulous gay uncle that blows through town like a nor’easter leaving sassy catchphrases your parents hoped you wouldn’t pick up. And yet, unfortunately, both you and your sister have made the case that perhaps there is enough love in my glittery velvet black heart to maybe one day raise a bouncy lil sunbeam of my own. It is wild to think that today you are two years old, when you simultaneously seen like you were born yesterday yet also have been a constant and I can’t imagine the Barbagallos without our littlest lion cub. In New York, your life is constantly intermixed with countless other lives and stories, each one just as complex and layered as your own. Even still, within those lives are innumerable other lives; within myself I feel I’ve already lived many over the 13 years I have called this city home. Some of those lives feel so distant, the traces of which almost fully faded like age old graffiti on a brick building, while other lives and lessons stay glowing in the background of our ever present day to day, like a neon sign on the skyline that buzzes to life every night without fail.

In a city of so many lives, it’s easy to get lost in that mix, even within those many lives that are all our own. There is a line between living and surviving, when the life you fall into takes you into a different life than what you knew before or ever imagined for yourself. But I am reminding myself to keep imagining, for I am still all those lives and stories and I will become even more. I am reminding myself that in this city, you can create whatever life you can imagine. Every life we live takes a closer to discovering what resonates most, when it’s meant to be. Looking forward to imagining more for myself this next year.

As we keep growing, so does our family, and I could not be more blessed than to have the one that I’ve got! Family is not only the group of folks you’re born into, but those who find their way into your circle, those you trust and love and can share your best moments or lowest lows. For the Barbagallos, family means those we have loudest and longest laughs with, with whom we share fabulous meals, those who are by our sides in all our most important memories.

Some of my most cherished adventures are with everyone in this photo. But today, I think of the beautiful Madison, who to this day remains one of the only people I’ve ever wandered up and down the Vegas Strip with taking ridiculous photos with strangers and trying to prove we had a better night than the rest of the crew who got into a nightclub. Maddie, on your birthday today I hope you know how much light and laughter you have brought into our family since the first time we met you.

Anyone who has ever had a conversation with my father has no doubt not walked away without one or two Bill-isms that might be a popular phrase you’ve never heard of or may very well just be something that somehow sticks. So many times in my life, especially at work, I’ve heard myself say something that my father has said thousands of times over the years to describe such a very specific situation or circumstance that I was convinced is something that everyone has said before, only to have people left staring at me like “did you just say ‘that’s a horse of a different color?’” Or (a personal favorite) “that and a dollar will buy you an ice cream.”

My father taught me that what you say is just as important as how you say it. I’ve learned to speak up, ask questions, make a joke, and aim for everyone feel included at work or at a dinner table. My dad speaks in a way where you hear from across the room both the words and the emotions, the expressions. There is storytelling and then there is STORY-telling, an art my dad has used to be an amazing speaker at conventions, engagements, dinners, or the opening of an envelope. I’m grateful that all the Barbagallos have learned to follow suit to never shy from using our voices to be a known presence in any office or team. I’m proud to the sassy meatball I am today thanks to this fabulous lil Italian man. Happy Birthday, Papa Smurf.

No matter how big or old I am, I will always be a mama’s boy.

If I ever expressed interest in anything, from dead-end community theater to flag football or archery, her first response was always “I’ll sign you up.” She to this day encourages me to see life as limited only by my own aspirations, and sees within me the ability to not only accomplish but also master anything I set my heart to. But only if I set my heart to it, because one thing about my mother is that she puts her heart into everything she does and she knows that heart is the secret to making something truly special.

It takes a heart as big as Montana to contain the generosity to open our home to family and friends at the drop of a hat, to be the first visitor when someone needs to get well soon, and to endure multiple performances of middle school musicals at varying pitches.

All of the skills I use everyday at work to turn commonplace rooms and tables into unforgettable scapes and experiences are talents I’ve inherited from my mother. And everyday I feel myself growing more like her and everyday I know that too to be a blessing. I love you, Lisa Lemm. Happy birthday, mama bear.

This diva is 4!

Wild how big the little one has grown. Brad and Madison, thank you for making me an uncle, and awakening in me the drive to build a family of my own one day.

Capri, you entered our family like a new sun in our universe, and the way your lil blonde head shines full of so much wonder and sass, we all knew there was a fresh queen B rising to the throne. This week you start preschool and I know we will be blinking our eyes and you’ll be walking across your high school graduation stage. Just like your father, your heart is full for your family and you fiercely love and protect your little brother, Hudson. My heart breaks seeing your milestones from across the country, but every visit home comes jam packed with new games, soap-opera level Barbie drama, silly filter photoshoots, fashion shows, and episodes of Peppa Pig to make up for lost time. Happy birthday miss thang.

When I was a lil one, my brother and I would drive my sister crazy: bouncing off the walls at ear splitting volumes and finding the greatest enjoyment terrorizing our reluctant babysitter.

One of the best things about getting older is that the gaps in age fade away as adulthood throws challenges that force us to mature and adapt, and having siblings to lean on and vent to turns out to be a blessing we never imagined when yelling at one another from the back rows of a packed SUV on a road trip.

Now, we drive each other to tears from laughing so hard at the stupidest jokes, confide in one another when the world feels its most tumultuous, and we’d jump at the chance to pile in a car for another adventure if we could.

She has always been one of my biggest supporters and fierce allies in living life proudly and unapologetically, always encouraging me to lean into my fabulous nature and even helping awaken it, from planning our family’s first gay pride celebration in the midst of the pandemic lockdown to giving my baby mug a full beat with perfect lips and lashes and accessories when forcing me to play dress up with her flower girl’s dress as a child (slayed, obviously).

Elaine, sometimes you are Elaina Maria the Italian chef, sometimes you’re the resident Queen B in the Barbagallo hive, sometimes Katrina Adriana the performer and scene stealer, but always and forever you will be my amazing sister. Happy birthday, DIVA.

There was a time when people would think we were twins, and there was a time when we could not be more different. There’s a point as kids where your brother can be your biggest enemy, and then there’s a point as adults where you realize he’s your closest friend. And to be honest, if you were to ask me if I ever thought that Brad, the hockey player who could make friends with a king or a pauper or a tree, with a sense of humor so ridiculous that teachers would make certificates officially declaring him class clown, would one day be a brilliant, compassionate lawyer, yoga master, and father of the most beautiful niece and nephew I could imagine, I would actually believe you.

Because this has always been Brad: someone who works hard to get something where others throw in the towel, who cares about what happens to everyone on both teams regardless of what his jersey says, who looks after family like an extension of himself.

Happy happy birthday, you big goof.

PROUD AS EVER 🌈

So thankful to walk with #IATSE representing #Local52 and entertainment workers unions across film, TV, commercials, and theater in the NYC area.

I’ve made a point to see the parade every year and it was a dream to get to march with so many talented, kind, and beautiful people and share the day with their families and loved ones. This year’s Pride feels more special and fragile than ever as rights for the LGBTQIA community are chipped away, PARTICULARLY FOR OUR TRANS FOLK WHO FAUGHT THE HARDEST FOR ALL OF US.

I am so blessed to have family and friends to support me; please take time to remember your gay, lesbian, bi, and TRANS members of your community who don’t have the privilege of something so simple as a family’s acceptance. Pride began as a protest for visibility and recognition and the fight is not over.

Stay safe, and stay fabulous. CHEERS TO THE QUEERS AND THE GOOD YEARS!

Happy Father’s Day to the man who has worked his whole life to provide the best for our family, who raised us to value one another and our friendships over things, who filled our home with decades of pop music and catchphrases no one has heard of, who continues in his retirement working everyday to be an amazing grandfather.
