we lost oliver yesterday. his poor little body just wasn’t strong enough and he seemingly wasn’t taking to the chemo.

this album is out now, and it is my proudest body of work to date. don’t get me wrong—i’ve loved every single, ep, and album release i’ve been fortunate to be part of, but this one is special.

when i set out to record the drums for this album back in december, my main goal wasn’t perfect takes. rather, it was to come out of the sessions with stems that i felt truly represented me as a drummer and audio engineer—in sound, ability, style, and effort. i’m so thrilled with the final results, and wanted to explain briefly why:

every drum part you hear on this record is a single, unedited, unquantized take. no punches, no nudges, and no samples—just the result of countless hours of writing, refining, practicing, preparing, and tracking (and maybe a little bit of obsessing over gear, tuning, and mic placement 🤓).

wavicle origins - part 3 of 3

after playing a few shows, we found ourselves in need of a new bass player. portland has no shortage of great bass players, so we pondered a few of the many names we had already met in our short time as a band. we came up with a few options, but we still pretty quickly knew we wanted to add @dave_tjaden to the mix. he was already a homie, and we had all seen him shred in @atomic_momma before. we asked, he said yes, and the wavy you know and love was born.

this has since become one of the best musical journeys i’ve ever been part of, and the ways in which we manage to constantly challenge ourselves with each new song are not something i ever really expected to get out of a band. the last few years have been extremely gratifying because of it, and i consider these dudes some of my best friends. i’m so excited for everything the future holds with this project, including our upcoming debut album (more on that soon 😉).

no story part today! i’ve been enjoying them, but i’ve also found myself sometimes just wanting to mention something about the video i’m actually posting, so i’m gonna switch it up here and there. wavy part 3 coming next week!

this is an older video from late-2022 at @holoceneportland. i played my first—and probably only—triple-header that night, as @wavicle.music opened, @reverbhunter went next, and @shannonentropy closed it out.

this is a brief drum solo from the shannon set. it was maybe only the second solo i had ever really played live, and it was also 100% improvised because i didn’t really feel comfortable with writing solos ahead of time back then. even with the fumbles and timing hiccups, i’m really happy with how it turned out and it’s always fun looking back at old videos, both for nostalgic reasons and to appreciate how i’ve grown!

how i record shows - part 2 of 3

next up was my gopro. i wanted a decent camera to take footage that was easy to use and provided a mostly set-and-forget experience, and i was having some storage space limitations on my phone. it worked well for a while, but older gopros tend to overheat and have a weird quirk where they only take 4 gb videos max, so it forced my to stitch together videos more than i’d like. i still use it, but it was a little more cumbersome than i’d hoped.

i could have worked with it and tried to for a while, but i recently lucked into the possession of two nice phones that take very high quality video. between these and the ead10, i finally feel like i can get videos and content that i can be proud of posting. the sound is great and requires minimal editing, and the video is more or less the same, making the end-to-end process very seamless. izakaya origins - part 2 of 3

i only really knew @lowetones when i joined, and i had long been impressed by his playing and commitment to improving his craft—we asked him to sit in on a few @wavicle.music shows that summer when we needed a bass player in a pinch. he always spoke very highly of his other project, and i finally got a chance to see them play. that night, i was instantly hooked by @tetsuo2.0’s songwriting.

that show was at @nofunportland, and i had never seen anybody fill up that space with sound quite the way they did. most of my past trips to portland’s smallest venue™️ had been to see bills full of heavier/louder projects, so getting the chance to see a more chill set was a welcome change and a surprisingly refreshing way to experience the space. i remember rewatching videos from that show several times over in the following weeks, and even sitting down to practice along with some of them because i enjoyed the tunes so much—secret time: i still go back and watch them sometimes. 👀 (to be continued)

wavicle origins - part 2 of 3

i met @_arrex at the party that night and jammed with him and @maurice.ramirez3, and it pretty instantly felt like a natural fit. i went back and played with them and the original bassist later, and quickly knew that i had to keep making music with these dudes.

even with that conviction boiling inside of me, at that time i was just starting my journey of deciding that i wanted to work towards full-time drumming, and had the idea in my head that the best route to playing more would be to sit in for shows and try to get hired for recording sessions. i was worried that joining another project may make that difficult, but i didn’t know that my main project at the time would only get back together for one or two more shows, so i’d soon have all the time in the world.

thankfully, i said yes to joining and got to work practicing and writing with them. we started playing shows and recorded our debut ep at @thecrystalcab, and that’s when i really started to see how special this band was becoming. there was still one important piece missing, though. 🎸👀 (to be continued)
