Two weeks ago, I made my way back to Kilifi for a brief visit. I had not been back there for five months. Five. This has been the longest I have been away from my current home. I was craving the sand, sea and sun because August in Nairobi has been grey and sad. I was not the same Kevin that left at the end of February. I had come back very different, and I needed to reintroduce this version of me to the place that has been my solace for the last eight years. To the place that also unveiled another version of me. The four days and three nights were sufficient, surprisingly. I was able to sit with myself, either at home, by the beach, or under the stars. Nature is healing, and it has immensely added to the ten-year journey with Multiple Myeloma.
Kilifi was a reminder, a reconnection, a reflection, a rooting, a reckoning, and a revealing. It was silencing fears and literally an opportunity to step into the water once again and trust this season and myself. Thank you, Kilifi and Mama Nature. taken in Kilifi by @kevmwachiro

Here’s a little more from the latest episode of the Justice Watchers Podcast with Francis Auma @fauma76 , where he speaks about the challenges human rights defenders (HRDs) endure in their work.

He recounts a moment in 2016 when he, alongside @hakiafrica , Muslims for Human Rights @muhurikenya, and other HRDs, were accused of promoting violence and had their accounts frozen following the publication of the report dubbed ‘We’re Tired of Taking You to Court’.

The report documented diverse human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings and abductions, among others linked to counterterrorism operations.

Through this and other experiences shared, he shows the courage and resilience it takes to continue defending human rights

What does queer joy look like across the African continent?

At the World Hope Forum, Kenyan journalist, podcaster, and Out Film Festival co-founder Kevin Mwachiro (@kevmwachiro) took us to Gaborone, where he marched in Botswana's Second Pride, cheered on by strangers and truck drivers alike.

The last few months have been a rollercoaster, I call Season 3. I’ve been stretched in ways that I’d never imagined, but also been showered with love that has overwhelmed me. I won’t lie, it’s been tough, but I’m grateful for the support that has come my way. I’ve lived with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer, for over ten years now, but this latest episode has forced me to stop, rest, recover and receive. The journey ahead could be long and unpredictable. However, I remain hopeful, grateful and honest with myself even on the days dark moments get the better of me. I’m not the same person that I was at the start of the year. Cancer has a way of unveiling your person, and it is currently doing that to me. I don’t know how long this season will last, but I do hope that I come out a better person than I was yesterday.

Slide 2: Pills, pills, pills - morning dose
Slide 3: Last day of the last hospital admission
Slide 4: This was my first unaided walk.
Slide 5: Learnt that the body can get addicted to oxygen, imagine!
Slide 6: My body has changed drastically. I've lost over 12 kgs.
Slide 7: My first infusion session
Slide 8: The activism doesn't stop :-)
Slide 9: Realised that the gym is my happy space. I had a catheter attached to me for a fortnight. The black bag contained my urine bag, or my susu bag, as friends described it.
Slide 10: I started off with infusions, but now I'm on oral meds.

I’m back here again. Here is dealing with Multiple Myeloma. It is one of three blood cancers around, and fortunately, more research is being done on the disease.

I am defining it as Season Three because each time I’ve had to engage with the disease, it’s taught me a lot about myself. It’s been unlocking elements of me, and I’ve become a better person.

I’m learning to look at this new body and form differently, and I still love the person I am.

Most importantly, the season ends. Despite this season, there is still so much to give thanks for.
