The Stranger by Albert Camus is a short novel about a man who refuses to conform what society expects of him, and how that makes him an outsider.

Here’s my honest review on it. My first dive into absurdist philosophy 🪨

The earth and I made our round again beneath this blazing sun that is life.
However, it seems that I have grown older than her, she is still the same in a relative way.
But this does not frighten me.
For what is aging, but the universe changing shape within itself?

After all, I am only the universe

Gregor Samsa (and Kafka) had my whole heart while reading this surprisingly short yet emotional novel.

Last slide is my biggest take and cheers to book covers that don’t include any insects!

Politics and the English Language 📖

Genre: Essay, political criticism, literary criticism
Published: 1946

Right after finishing two of Orwell’s books this month, I just had to read this one next—which is pleasing because it’s only an essay, and a good one at that.

It’s a practical guide especially if you’re diving into reading and eventually, writing.

What this reminded me of was this Morrissey quote about Oscar Wilde, who I think is a great example of exactly what Orwell is talking about. He said:

“I always felt that in order to write you had to be completely obscure and incredibly intellectual. So intellectual that nobody could possibly ever understand what you were talking about. Using incredibly long words and being incredibly profound. Then I read Oscar Wilde and he used the most basic language, and he said the most powerful things. All the words were immediately understandable and fundamental. He wrote such immense poetry and it occurred to me that saying the most basic things and very real things—that here was the power of the written word. Rather than being completely ostentatious and rhetorical.”

Animal Farm by George Orwell 🌾

“Better a pig than a fascist,” as Miyazaki wrote in Porco Rosso (1992). But what happens when the pig becomes the fascist?

Genre: Political satire, allegorical novella, dystopian fiction
Published: 1945

I honestly didn’t know what I was expecting when I started this book. I was expecting, perhaps, an animal-versus-human kind of plot, something whimsical like Charlotte’s Web. But like many of Orwell’s books, it turned out to be much deeper than that and something far more unsettling.

It is important to remember that Orwell wrote this during a time of major political disruptions, particularly in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. I personally think many great writers emerged during these important periods of history and political reform, because they were living through them. What begins as a charming children’s fable soon becomes eerily familiar, both in the history we learn in class and in the world today.

Just like 1984, it explores the idea of a society forgetting its own history, which is, of course, a recurring theme in Orwell’s work. I’ve never been an avid reader of political fiction before, but he makes it so easy to read and digestible that by the end, I embarrassingly found myself crying over a freaking horse (Boxer broke my heart in a thousand pieces), and completely haunted by the ending.

So why does this book matter?

Because we don’t have to live in Orwell’s time or have any connection to the Russian Revolution to understand it. The hunger for power among those who run our society, and the exploitation of those beneath them, are resentments that workers and commoners like us continue to share.

We are not angry enough, or perhaps not attentive enough. And Orwell shows us what happens if we stay that way.

1984 by George Orwell 📖

”It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen…”

To say that 1984 can be a comfort book is crazy... and yet, in some ways, it really was. But beneath that strange comfort is a more unsettling question: is this an impending prediction, or are we already living in it?

In Orwell’s world, privacy is a luxury, food is scarce, reality (and even language) can be manufactured, and fear is an even more powerful weapon than violence.

White bread, sugar, coffee, and chocolate are treated as luxuries; things we so easily overlook because they’re readily available to us today. Even freedom... which reminded me that freedom isn’t only about being able to speak or go where you want. It’s also having a private space to think, to remember, and to have thoughts that belong entirely to you.

Privacy is a luxury. And so is the freedom to think… to preserve truth, memories, language, and history. These things are worth protecting 🌱
