Last week was La Casa’s Latin@ Culture Show, and I feel so blessed and proud to have included my little brother, David, in it. After Trump’s zero-tolerance policy in 2018, our family was separated. But today, my brother and I proudly represent our parents’ countries—Nicaragua and Guatemala. Seeing him surrounded by so many people celebrating their cultures with pride was an enriching experience that we will never forget.

A lot is changing at UofM, especially when it comes to DEI. Through all these challenges, I want my brother to know that while institutions like UofM and other “prestigious” schools may try to tokenize or belittle us, they never can. It is crucial that we continue to uplift our community, now more than ever.

If and when my brother (and my son) chooses to attend UofM, I hope he remembers this moment and carries forward the fight for those who can’t advocate for themselves.

To my La Casa family—I love you all deeply. Let’s keep taking up space at this PWI and showing them the power and resilience of our comunidad.

Con mucho amor,
Keyla ;)
