Released initially in 1978, Akagawa is beloved by many already. This is the first book in The Mikeneko Holmes series, and it follows Detective Katayama and the cat who chose to adopt him, Holmes. The story starts out with murder, of course. There is a prostitution ring and a corruption ring that have taken over Hagoromo Women’s College. Young women are dying in their rooms, and a prominent professor is found murdered in a locked room. Broken down into four parts, this story takes you on a classic Agatha Christie ride to figure out how the impossible has become possible. Over the past couple of years, I have learned just how much I adore Japanese Literature. It tends to have well-written emotional depth while being easy to read. This book is no exception. I’ve been reading a lot of Christie and Doyle, and Akagawa has earned their place right alongside them. I was able to figure out one of the twists, but there were so many more! This is the perfect book for Fall. Grab your warm coffee, a blanket, and settle in to binge this book and discover all of its secrets. While this book leans more toward thriller, you can definitely tell that Gordon has a knack for writing horror elements. I got the same creepy feeling as watching Don’t Worry Darling, where everything just feels on the edge of cracking, and you can’t help but watch. These are the stories that stick with you because they’re based just enough on real life to unnerve you. I love a paranormal read, especially when it has some type of adventure as well. Howie and Lucy are such a fun pair. Lucy despises everyone, including herself, and it shows. However, I still feel bad for her and empathize with her as she’s going through life. I read this book in no time because I didn’t want to put it down. While I had figured out a few of the paranormal pieces, there was a lot that I didn’t know. I also really enjoyed learning the historical parts that she spoke about with Peter. This was my first, but it won’t be my last book from O’Donnell. THE BLACK ORCHID By Loreth Anne White @lorethannewhite #KristinAtherton_Narrator Montlake / Brilliance @brilliancepublishing Fiction / International Suspense Personal assistant to a wealthy legendary war photographer, Poppy Buchanan was conflicted about the upcoming Mediterranean Sea voyage on the luxurious Black Orchid. The ship itself was everything she could have imagined but the vibe and interactions of the nine occupants within the five executive cabins was strained. As she struggled to sort out her place in the inter-relationships of the guests it seemed there was a destructive force at work along with the physical force of the weather that would control the resulting tragedy. White puts a twist on a locked room / closed circle novel by looking back from a documentary perspective which gives distance to the story while also making it front and center. My favorite of the characters was Carter, the eight-year-old grandson of FBI profiler, Dr. Gideon Marsh. She has a top thriller every year, and her style is well-known for running the gamut. For fans of her book Don’t Let Him In, this is the book for you. Jane is your everyday average neighbor who minds her own business and lives an average life. That is, until she discovers a little white terrier. She learns that the terrier belongs to a home a few hours away from where she found it, so, like a good Samaritan, she drives the little dog to its home. However, when she arrives, she starts to remember a dark past that she thought she had buried and overcome. She not only found the dog’s home, but she remembered it from her past. I’ll start by saying I’ve read a LOT of Lisa Jewell books. When I see her name pop up with a new book, I automatically add it to my TBR. So it’s possible I’m biased, but I believe that she’s just that good. Her thrillers always have such a unique element, whether using a podcast format like None of This is True, or dealing with the horrors of today like The Night She Was Gone, or the horrors of the past like this book. I’ve read her books physically and on audio, and I’m never disappointed. If you’re a fan of thrillers, I highly recommend you also give her a read.
