A Tribute to Dervan Malcolm, A Broadcaster Extraordinaire

The airwaves have lost a truly remarkable voice, but the legacy of Dervan Malcolm will live on in the hearts of the many people he touched.

Being a great broadcaster takes more than having a powerful voice. It takes genuine care, thoughtfulness, curiosity, and a sincere interest in people. Dervan had that gift. When he interviewed you, you could feel that he was genuinely listening. His questions came from a place of real interest and a desire to understand, educate and create awareness.

He wasn’t doing it for the likes, the views or the applause. He understood the responsibility that came with having a platform and used his voice to inform, empower and make a difference.

And then there was that powerful voice and broad smile that became so familiar to us, especially in those mid-afternoon moments on air. His presence was unmistakable.

I am especially grateful that our paths crossed. Thank you, Dervan, for your encouragement, for believing in me and for being one of those media personalities who supported and encouraged me as I started my entrepreneurial journey. Those moments may have seemed small to you, but they meant so much to me.

Your voice may have gone silent, but the conversations you started, the awareness you created, the people you encouraged and the lives you touched will continue to speak for you.

Thank you for using your voice with purpose.
Thank you for the encouragement.
Thank you for the memories.

Yesterday's 65th Anniversary Tourism Forum and Annual General Meeting was more than a celebration of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association's remarkable legacy. It was a glimpse into the future of tourism in Jamaica.

It was inspiring to see the nation's tourism family united under one roof at the beautiful Sandals Dunn's River. From the Minister of Tourism, policymakers, hoteliers, investors, tourism leaders, allied members, and industry stakeholders, the event reflected a shared commitment to shaping a stronger, smarter, and more sustainable tourism sector.

The day was filled with promise, optimism, and a clear vision for the future. As Jamaica's tourism industry continues to evolve, I have no doubt that our destination will remain a leading force in the Caribbean. With greater emphasis on technology, environmental sustainability, innovation, strategic investments, workforce development, authentic Jamaican experiences, and stronger public-private partnerships, the opportunities ahead are limitless.

Congratulations to the newly elected Executive Committee as you take on the responsibility of leading the Association into its next chapter. Congratulations also to the outstanding employees who were recognised for their dedication, excellence, and unwavering commitment to service. Your contributions continue to strengthen Jamaica's tourism industry every day.
