When the Assignment Changes - DAY 12

So I’m not asking:

“Who am I now that my girls are grown?”

I know who I am.

I’m the woman God built through every mile driven, every gap filled, every prayer prayed, every memory made, every hard season survived and every person I loved enough to rearrange my life for.

Maybe one assignment is changing.

But my purpose isn’t disappearing.

So now my question is different:

God, what did You spend all those years preparing me for?

And for the first time in a while…
I think I’m excited to find out. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 11

Maybe my purpose was never just being needed.

Maybe all those years of filling gaps were filling something in me too.

The homeschooling.

The business.

The driving.

The hard seasons.

The celebrations.

The ordinary Tuesdays nobody remembers but me.

Maybe none of it was wasted.

Maybe it was training.

Which changes the question completely. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 10

For most of my adult life, I woke up knowing my assignment.

Now I find myself asking God questions I haven’t had to ask in years.

What am I good at next?

Where do You need me now?

Who am I becoming when everyone doesn’t need something from me?

And maybe I’ve been asking the wrong question. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 9

There’s a strange kind of grief that comes with getting exactly what you prayed for.

Healthy girls.

Strong girls.

Girls with dreams.

Girls brave enough to leave home and build lives of their own.
I wouldn’t change any of it.

But I’m learning gratitude and grief can sit at the same table.

And neither one cancels out the other. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 8

Maybe that’s why this season has been harder than I expected.
It isn’t just that my girls grew up.

It’s that while I was building their childhood…
motherhood was building me.

I became really good at showing up.

Figuring it out.

Making it happen.

Being the rock.

So what happens to the rock when everybody starts building homes of their own?

I’m still figuring that one out. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 7

I don’t think I miss being needed every second.

I’m proud that they don’t need me like that anymore.

That was the goal.

But I do miss knowing exactly where I fit.

For 20 years, somebody always needed something.
And I knew what to do.

Now there are days when nobody needs me to fill the gap.

And I’m learning not to confuse that with having no purpose. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 6

The funny thing about raising your children to become independent is…

sometimes it actually works.

They grow up.

They make decisions without you.

They build lives that don’t revolve around your home anymore.
One gets engaged.

One moves to Texas for college.

And suddenly the job you were really, really good at starts changing.

That’s the part I wasn’t prepared for. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 5

There’s so much work women do that will never make a résumé.

Nobody gives you a promotion for creating peace in a home.

There’s no award for noticing what everybody needs before they ask.

No paycheck for making ordinary life feel special.

For years, I never really questioned the value of it.

I could see it sitting around my dinner table.

But eventually that table changes. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 4

I thought I was just getting them where they needed to go.

I was actually teaching them:
Your dreams matter here.

I thought I was just opening our house to their friends.

I was actually saying:
There’s room for you here.

I thought I was just making holidays special.

I was actually building memories they would someday call their childhood.

And there are thousands of things like that nobody will ever know I did.

That used to bother me less than it does now. by @khalithogmartin

When the Assignment Changes - DAY 3

Sometimes making a home meant moving an hour and a half away so one of our girls could chase something she loved.

Sometimes it meant driving that same distance for Bible study because that was where they were being fed.

Sometimes it meant spending the afternoon at the barn so one of them could go horseback riding and do something she loved.

Gymnastics. Golf. Soccer. Friends. Dreams.

If one of my people needed something, my brain immediately went to:
Okay… how do we make this work?

But here’s what I didn’t realize then…

All those little decisions were doing something bigger. by @khalithogmartin
