Long-anticipated, this issue radiates joy in 128 pages of essays, interviews, recipes, poetry, fiction, photography, collages and illustration. Featuring works from 2022 to 2025, we hope this issue inspires you to hold onto joy just a little bit tighter.

A reminder that we’ll be in Manchester this Saturday 24th at @overherezinefest from 10am-4pm! Come by to browse Khidr Collective zines and merch at the People’s History Museum (M3 3ER), and pick up copies from @seen_universe which we’ll also have on sale.

A throwback to our last time in Manchester, at @longsightartspace in July, sharing all the hands that hold joy, our fifth issue.

We were also lucky to share words from @sufiyaansalam and his book WIMMY ROAD BOYZ, via @houseofbooksandfriends alongside zines from @peim786 and @mangojamcollective . We’re excited to see Mango Jam’s first print this Saturday, alongside so many brilliant zine makers and vendors!

Looking back at our special evening in Manchester, ‘joy is a space we make’. Thank you to all who took part and helped bring this magical event together.

We were very lucky to be joined by the talented @zeashanashraf who took these photos on the night. We are so grateful to the @longsightartspace for being the absolute best hosts for this occasion. Thank you to our panellists @peim786 @fajkart @notnishat and moderator @jessica_elmal for exploring the world of self-publishing.

A special note of gratitude for author @sufiyaansalam for joining us on the night and speaking with such heart and humour to our growing community. Lastly, thank you to @kamransajid and @maryamalsaeid for performing such warm and reflective poetry.

Our friends @houseofbooksandfriends were there selling WIMMY ROAD BOYZ as part of the marketplace. Zines from @peim786, mangojam and @seen_universe were also on sale, alongside the newest issue of the Khidr Zine, Holding Joy.

For those who couldn't make it, fret not! Khidr Zine 5: Holding Joy is still available to buy on our website (khidrcollective.co.uk), as are a limited number of our previous issues.

The vibes were amazing, the chai was flowing, and we were so glad to curate such a cosy night of conversation for our Manchester audience.

Here's to many more Manchester motives!

Let us know your thoughts in the comments & what else you’d like to see up north. Lots of love from all of us. by @khidrcollective

DAY 39 of 75 ART

Today my brother and I attended the Khidr Collective launch of their new Zine, Issue Five - Holding Joy.

Khidr Collective is a UK-based multidisciplinary arts organisation founded in 2017. It’s so cool, platforming original works, from zines, to poetry, to visual arts by British-Muslim creatives.

We saw some lit talks about indie publishing moderated by Jessica El Mal (curator & artist), talking with multidisciplinary artist and cofounder of @mangojamcollective , as well as other amazing artist.

We also heard some beautiful poetry by Kamran Sajid (writer, poet, and founder of @offlinebooksmcr book club), and Maryam Alsaeid (Iraqi-British poet, pharmacist & faciliator).

Finally, saw an interview moderated by the wonderful Warda Khokhar, with non other than @sufiyaansalam , talking about his debut novel Wimmy Road Boyz. Give it a read!

Stole some time while watching to sketch.

Sufiyaan & Kamran in pen.

Less than 24hrs to go! 🎉 Last but not least, @maryamalsaeid is a Iraqi-British poet, pharmacist, and facilitator based in Manchester. Her work explores faith, memory, Arabic music, longing, and the intimate landscapes of family and womanhood.

She has been published in Poetry Ireland Review, @PoetryWales, @TheManchesterReview, @BadLilies, and elsewhere, and has performed at festivals and literary events across the UK.

She is currently developing her first full-length poetry collection as part of the Advanced Writing Programme at Arvon, where she is exploring the intersections of devotion, inheritance, and the Arabic lyric tradition.

What’s more – Maryam is part of JARDA who contributed a visual piece to our latest issue, Holding Joy. Don’t forget to check it out when you pick up your copy tomorrow!

✒️ Kamran Sajid is a home-grown talent whose breathtaking poetry has been featured across Manchester and beyond.

His writing is atmospheric, surreal and distinct, having been published in English PEN's Transmissions series, and commissioned by @factory_international. He has also read at Simon Armitage's “Blossomise” book launch, @mcrlitfest, and Aviva Studios.

📚 Deeply connected to Manchester's creative scene, @kamransajid_ also runs @offlinebooksmcr, a book club bringing together creatives and art-lovers to discuss literature.

He'll be giving us an exclusive first look at some new work at Joy is a Space We Make: Khidr in Manchester. 🎤

Our first Manchester event this Saturday has been named! Don’t miss this one:

“Joy is a space we make: Khidr in Manchester”

Since releasing Holding Joy, the latest issue of the Khidr Zine, we've been reflecting on the playful and political centrality of joy. The rebellious act of finding joy and keeping it against all odds. Across its pages, one thing becomes clear: joy isn't just a fleeting emotion – it’s a call to action.

Joy is a space we build together.

Our Manchester event on Saturday 25th July brings attention to the making of joy through the written word and zine-making – delving into independent publishing, poetry and daring prose that compels the literary world to amplify our perspectives.

Our panellists and special guests on the evening will speak to this – reflecting on how we make joy within our communities through and in environments that too often neglect us.

There will of course be books, zines, music, tea and nibbles to enjoy, too!
