Church called, they wanted to know when we'd be collecting Form C. Of course, we didn't know🥴. We called Mr. A and asked the same question. He told us to first come around to take our oaths. Normally, It takes 21 days after you make payment and submit a notice of marriage or application, before you are given a date for your oath taking, usually a Tuesday. Within this timeline, your info (yours and your spouse's) will be displayed on their notice board which can also be found online. Remember that part where the priest asks 'anyone who wishes for these two to not be joined' to speak up or forever hold their peace? Well yeah, the court puts you on display for that reason, cute, no? 😁.

17th November, 2020. We carried ourselves to the registry. Dress properly guys. They'll probably tell you to come as you are cos it's just oaths you're taking, but look nice (and comfortable) trust me, e dey reduce questions. We got there at 9:00am, 1hr late. Mr. A wasn't there as at the time we arrived, his line was off. Ms. B was around, she told us to sit in for the counselling session first and that the oaths will be taken right after. We were honestly looking for a way to escape that counselling session lol. We called Mr. A again, we got through to him, he told us the same thing. Sit for counselling. Wow, such a waste of time 🥲. Wear your mask sha, because social distancing doesn't exist within those walls.

Counselling was done! Praise God. Time to take an oath that all the info you have provided is the truth and nothing but the truth🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽‍♂️. Hold change guys, that place is the center of racket and monopoly lol. You'll see a woman selling pens, purchase two. It doesn't make sense but it's important lol. We marched to the hall where the oaths were going to be taken. You'll need to wait your turn. We didn't lol. That's why I said dress well oh👀. There will be different officials attending to different couples, be sharp, look for two empty seats and stay there. Your official will be seated right in front of you and they'll ask you for those pens 🖊🖊. Better have them or it's you're not ready, next!'

Okay just to clarify, Certificate of spinsterhood (or bachelorhood) in Nigeria is basically an affidavit attesting to her (or his) single marital status, clearly stating that the woman (or man) is free to marry and there is no hindrance of a proposed marriage. It serves to prove a woman’s (or man's) unmarried status.

Now that that's out of the way, where was I🤔?...We filled the necessary forms and handed them to Ms. B. When she saw that my church was stated as the venue for the wedding, her countenance changed. She figured it was Form C we wanted. Now Form C is given to you by the registry to take to your church if it is licensed by the Ministry of Interior to conduct weddings (Form C authorises your church, if licensed, to wed you. Church ain't gonna wed you without it🥴). This means your church will hand your marriage certificate (the same one the registry would have given) to you after signing on your wedding day.

Anyhoo, she searched for my church under its local government but alas! She couldn't find my church listed on their database. Problem! Plenty questions. Should we just get it done in court? If we did, the church will conduct a marriage blessing and our vows will be different. Did church's license expire? Is church registered under a different local government? Where was Mr. A? What do we do? We asked her to pause with the process until we at least clarified with the church that everything was okay. The plan was to call her soon as we got info from church.

Well lo and behold, church's license expired during the lockdown but they renewed in August. We called Mr. A and he confirmed that the church renewed their license and that there was nothing to worry about aka he would go on with the process. Problem solved abi? Or so we thought! To be continued...🥲

A lesson though, doesn't matter if you paid anyone or not, long as you're in this country, please follow up. Any questions so far🤓?

It was 3:45pm October I can't remember the date, 2020, we drove into the Federal Marriage Registry, Ikoyi to make enquiries for our wedding in December. We had asked friends what the process was like but a lot of the information we got was quite here and there. My church was licensed but we had to do some ground work, so we decided to hit the ground running...yay proactiveness💪🏽

We met a top guy at the registry, Let's call him Mr. A, who detailed everything we needed and cost implications. You see we didn't know we could complete the application and make payments online. He didn't exactly make it sound interesting or easy so we did the thing the average Nigerian would do - asked him to handle it🥴

Fast forward to 1 week later, we came back with copies of valid IDs, birth certificates and passport photographs, met with Mr. A's secretary, we'll call her Ms. B, made payment because payment confirms order lol...There was a small issue that ended up becoming a big issue, but that's story for another day...

Just know if you're two Nigerians looking to get married at the Ikoyi registry, then both of you need these:
1. Valid IDs
2. Birth certificates (or sworn affidavits for declaration of age)
3. Passport photographs
4. Sworn affidavits of spinsterhood and bachelorhood

Another thing, start early, like 6 weeks early. I'll continue this gist later, maybe tomorrow, who knows 👀?

I haven’t spent Christmas with people in a while. It was always my husband and I, celebrating Christmas from a different location.

This Christmas though was one for the books. Heck it’s my first feed post of 2024. It’s cos I spent it with some of the most amazing people in the world.

I hope you spent yours sharing in the Christmas joy.

I wanna take this opportunity to thank everyone who took time out to celebrate me last month. I saw the comments, posts and status updates. I’m still getting prayers and gifts and I’m here for it all ❤️

It’s important I thanked @adornedbyjoy for coming through and delivering excellence on such short notice. Thank you for the extra help as well. You sabi the work 🫡
