I wanted to reshare this photo from one of January’s ICE Out protests I attended because I felt like the message was well suited for what’s going on right now. If you haven’t heard already, a woman we only know as Jane Doe is suing Cornell University and her 7 rapists from 2024. Jane Doe was allegedly drugged and gang raped over several hours by 7 Chi Phi members (including one who she considered a friend) The entirety of the rape was broadcast via Snapchat to 50+ other frat members as “free pussy”.

Silence can be really powerful in the wrong way and I don’t want to contribute to that. If you ever see something that feels wrong, say something, do something. Assumptions can be dangerous but the reality can be so much worse. Sexual assault is a huge issue among women not only in the US, but all over the world. 1 in 2 women in the US will experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. More than 1 in 5 will experience attempted or completed rape.

The reason myself and many women are so angry right now is because this is a situation we are not completely removed from. New Year’s Eve 2019, I was sexually assaulted by someone I thought was my friend. While my experience was completely different than Jane Doe’s and I would never compare the two situations, the reason my assault didn’t turn into rape is because I had friends who were brave enough to say something and do something when they knew something wasn’t right.

Now imagine the difference any of those 50+ men could have made if they just chose to do the right thing when they knew what was happening to Jane Doe was wrong.

There is power is speaking up. Speaking up won’t ruin your aesthetic.
