We are brought into the world with so much hope and faith in humanity. We grow up to learn that it may not be as pretty and perfect as it once seemed. We are reminded to check if someone is following us, put your keys between your knuckles, and always know where the closest exit is. These moments can change the person we are and make us untrusting of the world around us. It can else fill your mind with self hatred and a sense of blame on yourself. This dance is a reminder that you aren’t to blame and you deserve more from the people around you. This dance is dedicated to the lives that have been affected by harassment of any kind. You are not alone and we stand with you. by @kialavelde

I have always been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve learned that I may not understand it, but I can still love it, appreciate it, and LEARN ABOUT IT. I’ve heard more and more stories of despair and heartache because of judgement and unkind words. And these unkind words making people think their is no way out. And when suicide affected my own family this year, I needed to do the only thing I can do best. Make a dance. I had 5 brave and beautiful young dancers come in with complete understanding and maturity to bring this dance to life. I will hold this dance close to my heart forever. Remember, your words can build or break someone. Let’s take some time to put our preconceived judgements aside and let people know they are accepted and loved. “One page of the Bible isn’t worth a life.” Lets be better, do better, and accept one another.

Rape culture is the fact that only 3% of rapists ever serve a day in jail. Rape culture can be seen in the fact that 1 in 3 women aged 18-24 have experienced sexual harassment. 1 in 4 young people think it’s normal for men to pressure women into sex. 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15. 1 in 6 women experienced abuse before the age of fifteen. Are these statistics alarming enough? I’m sure you can think of at least six women in your life.

But the issue of rape culture comes down to more than just statistics. Let’s talk about your mother, your sister, your best friend. Let’s talk about them. Let’s discuss the victims, the real people, whose confronting, terrifying and ultimately nauseating stories are diminished, trivialised and laughed at in society. Women are forced to change their daily lives to avoid situations in which they could be catcalled, harassed or subject to violence, but isn’t it more important to change the way we talk about gender violence in day to day life?

It’s time we change the conversation surrounding rape culture, and it’s normalisation in contemporary society. And it’s us, the youth of today, who have to make the first moves. Every time someone makes a rape joke, they’re perpetuating the culture. Stop supporting individuals with sexual assault allegations to their name. Call out sexual harassment at parties, in your schools, universities, in the workplace. Stand with the people who are brave enough to share their stories. Believe them, because their words hurt to say. When we change this conversation, we change the lives of women. We increase safety, reduce fear, and overall, we create a society where all people feel valued and important.
