Days 3 & 4 of the Royal Arch Loop.

Day 3 was the big one. We woke up to clear skies after a wet and windy night, spent the first few miles along the river, then climbed through Garnet Canyon to the western end of the Tonto Trail. From there it was a long contour in and out of side canyons, the Colorado dropping further below with every mile until we were more than 1,300 feet above it. Late afternoon we hit the South Bass Trail and followed it down to the beach above Bass Rapids for our last night on the river.

Day 4 was easy to plan: 7 miles and 4,700 feet up, one way out. We left early to stay ahead of the heat and moved fast up Bass Canyon, shaded almost the entire way to the Esplanade. A lunch stop there and the last of the whiskey, then the final push up to the rim. taken in Grand Canyon National Park by @kickinaglass

Days 1 & 2 of the Royal Arch Loop: 4 days and ~43 miles of hiking far from the Canyon's Main Corridor and its crowds.

Day 1 started at the South Bass Trailhead. Over 13 miles we dropped more than 5,000 feet through the Esplanade and down Royal Arch Drainage, trading ponderosa pines for canyon walls that kept closing in. Camp was under Royal Arch itself, the largest natural arch in the Grand Canyon.

Day 2 was shorter on miles but not on views. A climb back up the drainage, then onto the Tonto Shelf where the Colorado finally came into view, green and running fast, more than 1,000 feet below. A rappel got us down to Toltec Beach, where a handful of rafters drifting past were the only other people we'd talk with for the rest of the trip. The afternoon belonged to Elve's Chasm, a slot canyon oasis tucked just downstream of the arch. taken in Grand Canyon National Park by @kickinaglass

From Northern Arizona long runs to sunrise 10Ks at SOMO, a summer that all came together at @javelinajundred : three wild loops through the Sonoran Desert.

@g_slaw and I flew (and skipped) through the first ~22 miles on loop one. We completely torched any semblance of a responsible pace, but it was so much fucking fun. There were moments I turned and said, “What the hell are we doing to ourselves?!”

Each loop ended back at Javelina Jeadquarters, where our family and friends were waiting to cheer, feed, and shove us back out for another lap.

We split up halfway through loop two after I started to slow down. Around mile 33, a cruising @mountainroche glided by on his way to crushing the 100-miler, still managing to drop a “You’re amazing” as he and his pacer disappeared into the desert.

Loop three brought sunset, cooler air, and @skyislandjohn on pacing duty. With a heavy mix of hiking and shuffling, it was the slowest loop of the day...but I saved just enough juice to leg it around Jeadquarters one last time and earn that belt buckle.

I couldn’t have finished my first 100K without @emeerow leading the crew (and putting up with 4:20 a.m. alarms for months), Garrik pushing me through long runs around Prescott, and John hanging in for a true “Saturday Night Hike.” On top of that, getting to share the weekend with my parents, @allensm, @nicole___tang, and the coolest niece and nephew around made it all even better.

Highlights from my third and most memorable trip along the Escalante Route in the Grand Canyon.

Three days, 27 miles, and over 10,000' of total elevation change fueled by whiskey and junk food. Thanks to Allen, John, Garrik and Matt for making this an incredible weekend. taken in Grand Canyon National Park by @kickinaglass
