After a trip to Barcelona in 2005, I was invited to design my own can for @montana_colors. This was the 4th in the limited edition artist series (preceded by Os Gemeos, Lodown Magazine, and Flying Fortress), and released in January 2006 in a limited run of 500, split across 5 colours: Magenta, Tobacco, Pelt, Rose, and White. I was given 100 cans (20 of each colour), most of which I used + gave the rest away to friends. As an early release, this was before they printed the artwork on the cans. Instead, a wrap-around sticker was applied. After Bo130 and Microbe made the 5th design in the series, Montana went on to produce over 150 more collaborations and printed the artwork directly onto the cans for each. I was fairly happy with the design, although I was given strict instructions to keep the logo exactly as it is – something most of other artists ignored, and for me, the logo looked better being either monochrome or incorporating the same palette as the customised artwork. In hindsight, a looser sketch would have probably looked nicer than the super neat linework. That aside, having my own can was pretty surreal, but, of course, coming from a working class / graffiti background, I was also worried about ‘selling out’, so was somewhat conflicted by the experience. LEX-XX When Tom Brown set up the label as a subsidiary of WARP in 2001, I was one of the first artists he offered a record deal to. This led to the inclusion of the Req-produced track, RAP DRACULA on the inaugural LEXOLEUM series, intended as a precursor to my second album, Council Pop. Despite me self-releasing the album on my own Invisible Spies label in 2003, @lexrecords has always been my spiritual home. Over the years, I’ve released 3 of the 7 Kid Acne albums with LEX and have shared the stage with many of the artists on the roster, from Prince Po, Scroobius Pip and Jneiro Jarel, to Danger Mouse, Tes and Chuck Strangers, as well as extended family, such as El-P, Flying Lotus and Beans from Antipop Consortium. To celebrate a quarter of a century as a label that continues to go from strength to strength, LEX have just released the phenominal LEX-XX compilation album, complete with beautiful artwork and rare remixes from the archive, including the fantastically skewed Gescom (aka Autechre) dub mix of EDDY FRESH from 2007. The album also features contributions from MF DOOM, Boards of Canada, Prefuse 73, Stereolab, Eyedress, Fly Anakin, Thom Yorke, and Cate Le Bon. For the first time since 2012, I’ve decided to bring back the SOUTH YORKS Washing Machine Tees. Some of you will get the reference. Some of you may even remember that the original run coincided with an epic art and music event I curated as part of the @tramlines Fringe Festival that year, celebrating talent from across the region and beyond, hosted in a disused warehouse on the edge of the Cultural Industries Quarter and was painted inside and out. Very few photos exist of the event itself, which feels appropriate, although it 100% did happen. Thousands of people attended and the legendary FORGEMASTERS headlined. Like most of these spaces, the building has since been converted into commercial offices.
