Got Sober. Got ADHD. Now, I’ve got a podcast.

Progress? Probably. Life on hard mode? Absolutely. Nearly completed? I’II let you know.

I’ve worn a few masks, taken a few hits, and somehow smiled through, usually at the wrong time 😅

So I started a podcast. @tomupodcast

Because therapy is expensive, and apparently I love to overshare 🎙️

It’s real, it’s raw, and it might even make you laugh (mostly at me).

But who knows, it mighty help too, might resonate.

We can for deep, we can shave a laugh... that’s what life is, a mix of everything.

Give it a listen. Follow to join the journey.

And remember...

Be good to yourself 🙏🏼🧡

Two years sober.

It’s been a strange old journey. A lot of uncomfortable truths, some hard conversations with myself, and plenty of moments where I’ve questioned what the fuck I’m doing.

I’ve spent a lot of time looking back at the years I thought I’d wasted, but I’m slowly learning to make peace with them. After all, they made me who I am today.

I’m still figuring myself out, but I’ve found parts of me I thought were long gone. The curiosity, the laughter, the excitement for life.

And for that, I’m grateful.

Especially to those who stuck around when I wasn’t the easiest person to love.

Two years on, life isn’t perfect. Neither am I.

But I’m enjoying being here again.

Much love.

Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.

This carousel comes from one of many honest conversations I have on The Open Mic Unfiltered.

If this resonated with you...

Which slide hit you the hardest?

Looking back, I didn’t lose people because I was struggling.

I lost people because I refused to admit I was.
I thought being a man meant keeping my mouth shut.

Keep moving.
Keep drinking.
Keep laughing.
Keep pretending.

If I was falling apart, nobody needed to know.
So instead of asking for help, I buried everything.

The pain.
The fear.
The self-doubt.
The loneliness.

And when that stopped working, I reached for whatever helped me escape for a few hours.

Alcohol.
Dr*gs
Ego.
Attention.

Anything that meant I didn’t have to sit alone with myself.
The irony is I spent years trying not to look weak...

and in doing so I became the weakest version of myself.

Not because I was struggling.

Because I was running from it.

I pushed good people away.
Damaged relationships.
Burned bridges that didn’t need burning.

All because I was too scared to admit the truth:
I wasn’t okay.

The day I stopped lying to everyone else wasn’t the thing that changed my life.

The day I stopped lying to myself was.

If you’re carrying something heavy right now, don’t make the same mistake I did.

Talk to someone.

A mate.
A parent.
A therapist.
Anyone.

Because the strongest thing I ever did wasn’t fighting through it alone.

It was finally admitting I couldn’t.

How many times have you said:

“I’ll start Monday.”
“I’ll start next week.”
“I’ll start when things calm down.”
“I’ll start when I’m ready.”

Bollocks.

Not because you’re lazy.
Not because you’re weak.

Because waiting feels safer than failing.
So we wait.

We wait for motivation.
We wait for confidence.
We wait for the perfect set of circumstances.
We wait for life to magically sort itself out.

Meanwhile...

Another month goes by.
Another year goes by.
And nothing fucking changes.

Trust me, I know.

I spent years saying I was “going to” do things.
Going to get sober.
Going to sort my head out.
Going to get fit.
Going to start the podcast.
Going to rebuild my life.

Going to, going to, going to...

The truth?

Most of the things that changed my life started when I felt completely unprepared.

I wasn’t confident.
I wasn’t motivated.
I wasn’t ready.

I was just sick of my own excuses.

Because eventually you realise something:

Nobody is coming.
Nobody is coming to save you.
Nobody is coming to hand you confidence.
Nobody is coming to give you permission.

At some point you have to stop waiting for a sign...
and become the fucking sign.

So if you’ve been telling yourself:

“Next week.”

Maybe make this the last week you say it.

Start scared.
Start messy.
Start badly.
Just start.

Pick your hard.

For years I thought the goal was to become more normal.

Less loud.
Less weird.
Less intense.
Less emotional.
Less... me.

I got pretty good at it too.
I learned when to stay quiet.

When to laugh at things I didn’t find funny.
When to pretend I was interested in things I couldn’t care less about.

I learned how to fit in.

The problem?

The more I fit in, the less I recognised myself.

A lot of us spend years wearing masks because standing out feels dangerous.

Maybe we got bullied.
Maybe we got rejected.
Maybe we got laughed at.
Maybe we just got tired of feeling different.

So we shrink ourselves.

We hide the weird bits.
The passionate bits.
The creative bits.
The bits that make us light up.

The irony is...

The people who genuinely matter don’t want a watered-down version of you.

They want the real one.
The strange one.
The enthusiastic one.
The passionate one.
The one that gets excited about random shit.
The one that laughs too loud.

The one in this photo, apparently.

Finding your people isn’t about becoming someone else.
It’s about finally finding the people who let you be yourself.

Your people.
Your place.
Your peace.

One of the most frustrating things about ADHD is that from the outside it can look like you’ve done absolutely fuck all all day.

You haven’t cleaned the house.

You haven’t finished the project.

You haven’t replied to the messages.

You haven’t started the thing you’ve been telling yourself to start for three weeks.

So people assume you’re lazy.

Sometimes you assume you’re lazy.

But what they don’t see is the war that’s been going on inside your head since the moment you woke up.

The constant thinking.

The constant planning.

The constant guilt.

The constant loop of:

“I need to do that.”

“I’ll do it in a minute.”

“Why haven’t I done it yet?”

“What’s wrong with me?”

It’s exhausting.

Not because you’re physically doing loads.

Because your brain never seems to shut the fuck up.

And eventually you get so overwhelmed by everything you need to do that you end up doing nothing at all.

Then comes the guilt.

Then comes the shame.

Then comes the feeling that everyone else got handed an instruction manual for life that somehow skipped you.
If this sounds familiar, here’s your reminder:

You’re not broken.

You’re not lazy.

And you’re definitely not the only one fighting this battle.
Some days surviving your own brain is enough.

Tomorrow, we go again. 🙏🏼🧡

“This person needs medicating.”

Maybe.

Or maybe they need understanding, support, and a world that wasn’t built for everyone to be the same.

Nobody talks enough about the ADHD tax.

Not the medical bills.

Not the prescriptions.

The actual ADHD tax.

The subscriptions you’ve paid for 14 months and never used.

The food you bought with good intentions and discovered three weeks later growing its own civilisation in the fridge.

The hobby you were absolutely convinced was going to change your life...

...for 4 days.

The parking ticket because you forgot.

The replacement item because you lost it.

The second replacement item because you lost it again.

The package arriving at your door and genuinely having no idea what you’ve ordered.

The funny thing is, people think ADHD is just being distracted.

Most of the time it’s trying your absolute best and still somehow ending up paying an idiot tax to yourself.

Every.

Single.

Week.

Anyway, if you’re reading this while ignoring the five things you should probably be doing right now...

Welcome to the club.

What’s the biggest ADHD tax you’ve ever paid?

#adhd #adhdtax by @kiddsy123

How many times have you said...

“I’ll start Monday.”

“I’ll do it when things calm down.”

“I’ll wait until I’m ready.”

Bullshit.

Not because you’re lazy.

Not because you don’t want it.

Because waiting feels safer than failing.

So we wait.

For motivation.
For confidence.
For certainty.
For the perfect set of circumstances.

And while we’re waiting...

Months disappear.

Years disappear.

Opportunities disappear.

The truth?

Most of the things that changed my life started when I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

I wasn’t ready.

I wasn’t confident.

I wasn’t qualified.

I was just sick of standing still.

Nobody is coming to hand you permission.

Nobody is coming to tell you it’s time.

You don’t need another sign.

You don’t need another Monday.

You don’t need another year of thinking about it.

Start messy.

Start scared.

Start today.

Because one day you’ll wake up and realise you’ve spent years waiting for a green light that was never fucking coming.
