Praying Hands by Albrecht Dürer, 1508. Black ink and white heightening on (self-made) blue paper.

The story goes that the two brothers Albrecht and Albert Dürer (of 18 siblings) tossed a coin to see who’d go to art school and who’d fund it by working in the coal mine near their home in Nürnberg. The coin fell in Albrecht’s favor and he promised that he’d do the same for Albert after his studies.

Time passed and when Albrecht had finished his studies and came to his younger brother, it was unfortunately too late as Albert’s hands had become too rough, disfigured, and arthritic to follow a career in the arts. Albrecht drew Albert’s working hands in honour of his brother’s sacrifice.

I’m not sure if this is true or if it’s a made-up Christian moral tale about sacrifice and stuff, but I enjoyed it anyways.
A new, and plausible, theory proposes that this drawing was made after his Heller Alterpiece, and would function as a virtuous example of his skills he could show patrons, drawn on fine blue paper. The hands are now to be seen at the Albertina Museum in Vienna. by @kidnappedcharabanc

Josephine Baker with her pet cheetah Chiquita in Paris, 1931.

Josephine Baker was an American-born French dancer that became famous all over Europe in the 1920’s and 30’s, acted as a spy for the French resistance during World War II, and later became a prolific fighter for civil rights in the US. Legend to say the least. by @kidnappedcharabanc

Picasso in Palestine (2011).
In 2011 the Picasso painting “Buste de Femme” was exhibited for three weeks at the International Academy of Arts in Ramallah, Palestine. The project was initiated by artist Khaled Hourani.

Not only did the project bring a painting by one of the most famous painters in the world to a repressed people, It also highlighted the complications of this status as shipping protocols and insurances had to be made specifically for the occasion, as Palestine wasn’t regarded by insurance and shipping companies as a standard sovereign state.

Moving the painting required navigating Israeli military checkpoints, highlighting the heavy restrictions on movement and daily life in the West Bank.

The action can be interpreted as a rejection of victimhood stereotypes imposed by Western liberal sympathy, and as asserting normalcy and universal rights through the act of building a museum and exhibiting modern art. by @kidnappedcharabanc

There is an account of Rudolf Schwarzkogler—introduced to the public by Time Magazine—that maintains that the artist died as a result of deliberate and self-inflicted penis mutilations undertaken in a series of performances in the late 1960s. The brutality and unnecessary death of Schwarzkogler was described as the death of the avant-garde.

Though the account was entirely false, as the artist died several years after the performances, the myth lived on and became a conservative argument against performance art and the contemporary art world as such.

Ironically, the myth of Schwartzkogler became a trump card for the conformist and conservative ideology that he and the Viennese actionists had rebelled against in the 1960’s.

The story of Schwartzkogler is both the story of a boundary-breaking artist and member of one of the most radical artist movements ever, but also a story of the power of myth.
