👋🏻 Hi I’m Ellie, I was first diagnosed with end stage kidney failure at the age of 16, and have since faced numerous obstacles with my battle against this debilitating condition. After spending 14 months on dialysis, I received a successful kidney transplant in 2009 at the age of 17, which allowed me to live a full and vibrant life for 13 years.   I was inspired by my own experience with kidney failure, and became a nurse with the aim of helping individuals, like me, facing similar health challenges. I went to St.FX University returned to work in the dialysis unit where I once had been a patient.   However, at the age of 29 in 2022, my transplanted kidney began to fail. This led me to receive multiple blood transfusions to manage my deteriorating condition. Due to my history - my body has developed antibodies, dramatically reducing my chances of finding a successful donor match.   Finding a suitable kidney match is now extremely important. Individuals with O or B blood types are particularly encouraged to consider applying to become a potential donor. The selfless act of donating a kidney could grant me the second chance at life that I need.   I’m currently unable to work and require dialysis treatment five days a week at the hospital. Although individuals can survive on full-time dialysis for up to 20 years, I have aspirations to return to work, travel, and lead a fulfilling life that can only be achieved through a new successful kidney transplant.   If you feel compelled to learn more or apply to be my donor, please follow the information on this page. 💗Living Kidney Donor DIRECT MATCH and PAIRED EXCHANGE Program Information. 💭 Although Ellie requires a donor with O or B blood type - this isn’t the only way you can help her find a match. 🤍 The Kidney Paired Exchange program is an option the Kidney Coordinator will review with you during the process if you are not a Direct Match to Ellie. 🤍 The Kidney Paired Exchange is a program that matches transplant candidates with suitable living donors. it gives people the chance to become a living kidney donor while ensuring that someone they want to help receives a needed kidney, even if they are not a Direct Match. 🤍 There is no limit to how many people can enter into this Paired Exchange Program to help Ellie. The more people that enter into Paired Exchange - the higher her chances are of finding a match. 🇨🇦 Anyone in Canada can start the process of Direct Donation and Paired Exchange by calling the Kidney Coordinator at 1-902-473-5501 💭 To learn more about Living Kidney Donation you can visit the link in our bio by @kidneyforellie
💭 We’ve been getting lots of great questions and wanted to provide some clarity on how you can help Ellie in her search of finding the perfect match! ❔Do you have to live in Nova Scotia? 🤍 No! Anyone in Canada can start the Kidney Donation process by calling the kidney coordinator at 1-473-5501 ❔Do you have to have O or B blood type to help Ellie? 🤍 No! You can still start the process! If you are not a direct match to Ellie you can go into the Paired Exchange Program. You can be any blood type for this. This will dramatically increase Ellie’s chances of finding a match! ❔ Do you need a Family Doctor or Nurse Practitioner? 🤍 Yes! You do need your own Family Doctor or Nurse Practitioner to go through the donation process ❔How else can you help? 🤍 Share share share! 💭 Here’s some information on why Living Kidney Donation is so important - please feel free to reach out with any additional questions. 🤍 Here’s some additional info on how to start the process below • The donor screening process is confidential. You can get information and be screened before making a commitment to donate. • Possible donor must start the screening process themselves. This is done by calling the Living Kidney Donor Coordinator at this number : 1-902-473- 5501 • The Living Kidney Donor Coordinator will talk with you and ask you a few screening questions. • If there are no concerns, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire with information about your medical and social history. This may also be done over the phone • The Living Kidney Donor Coordinator will review the questionnaire with you, explain the next steps and answer any questions you may have. • If there are no more concerns, you will be referred for tests to make sure that it is safe for you to donate. Your Living Kidney Donor Coordinator will arrange for these tests.
