A new demo for the BITBAS Creative Coding Platform for the 1983 8-bit Nintendo Famicom console. This demo uses a low bitrate voice sample that was synthesised and then dropped into the code, but in theory the system should be able to record through the Famicom’s own 1-Bit microphone.

The scratches can be performed live with the controller, or pre-programmed with a special notation that borrows from TTM, the Turntablist Transcription Methodology, by John Carluccio with DJ Raedawn and Ethan Bahl.

There are 2 audio samples here, one is ‘Hello this is BITBAS’, and the other is a synthesised take on the ‘Ahh Fresh’ sample from Fab Five Freddy and Beside’s Change The Beat. The drum pattern is based on James Brown’s Funky Drummer.

Everything is very minimal due to the code constraints (16 lines, 32 characters max per lines), which has helped develop the syntax further, and also due to the Famicom platform’s own limits and the BITBAS ROM’s present storage capacity. This demo was also created with the Arkanoid Vaus rotational paddle controller in mind, but also defaults to the directional pad for control.

By nature the bitcrushed audio samples are harsh, so brace for that, but with my bass switched up it sounds good I think. I might edit the beat and sound levels later on, but for now will roll with this. More on BITBAS at: https://kierannolan.com/bitbas by @kierannolan

Amen 180, a Drum N Bass chiptune demo, running on the BITBAS Creative Coding Platform for the Nintendo Famicom (04 October 2026).

Gregory Coleman was the drummer behind the Amen break, a 7 second excerpt from his performance for The Wintons' 1969 track 'Amen Brother'. This break is a foundational drum beat of the Hip Hop, and later Drum N Bass genres, and has been sampled on over 6000 tracks. The 180 in the title refers to the 180 BPM tempo of the track, reconstructing Coleman's drum patterns over 4 bars through the Famicom sound chip.

First tests of BITBAS v0.8 on real Nintendo hardware (04/09/2026)

The BITBAS random circles code listing uses commands similar to how these would be drawn in p5.js, but merged with styles from the Basic programming language.

The test ROM is on a micro SD card running in an Everdrive N8 clone cart from AliExpress, running in an AV Famicom. This test was controlled using the dpad to type via an onscreen keyboard, but the application also supports the Famicom keyboard.

My p5 and Basic inspired creative coding environment for the 8-bit Nintendo Famicom / NES is nearing completion, with a new name - BITBAS - something that works in different languages and doesn't infringe any copyright - along the way I've been generating a user manual - this is from the cover page - it includes some experimental input output options. I've been building this part time since July with Claude. by @kierannolan
