Happy Hobbit Day, so named because Sept. 22 was the shared birthday of Bilbo Baggins and his nephew, Frodo Baggins. This 1972 copy of "The Hobbit" was owned by my brother, John M. Kiger. He introduced me to J.R.R. Tolkien's amazing world. The battered copy of "The Fellowship of the Ring" is from the box set of books John gave to me in 1977, when I was 11. He passed away when I was 13. These are wonderful books that not only transport to magical world, but they also keep me close to my brother. by @kigersnotebook

Eight years ago, I recorded a video in front of a soon-to-be demolished building in downtown Rochester. Passersby were not impressed by a man in his 50s with a selfie stick. Heh. by @kigersnotebook

I suppose AI or whatever can be a fast search engine, but I really miss having 10 minutes under deadline to find key context and details hidden in these worn envelopes. No matter the "prompt," I'm pretty sure AI would have struggled to find the right clippings to add depth to a last-minute article. by @kigersnotebook

For First-ish Appearances Friday, I have three supernatural nepo babies that mostly lean toward nurture over nature. Like their Dad did, they rebel against their father.

In the 1970s, Marvel’s Stan Lee decided it would be cool to make the Son of Satan a superhero. It was so crazy it worked.

* Daimon Hellstrom was briefly introduced in “Ghost Rider” #1, but his first full appearance was in “Marvel Spotlight” #12 in Oct. 1973.

He also had his own comic in 1976 where he was a college professor by day, which ran for eight issues.

* Satana, his kinda evil in a fun way  sister who might as well have been called She-Satan or Lady Satan, was also introduced in October 1973  in the cool black and white Marvel mag, Vampire Tales #2 and #3. She then appeared in the equally cool magazine, “Haunt of Horror” #2.

And, of course, there’s Mike Mignola’s much more heroic Hellboy published by Dark Horse.

He first appeared in some fanzine and comic convention stuff, but his first true (in my opinion) appearance was in “John Byrne’s Next Men” 21 in Dec. 1993.

The first actual Hellboy comic was the “Hellboy: Seed of Destruction” four issue story in 1994. by @kigersnotebook

Some interesting old Post Bulletin clippings about Mayo Clinic and IBM from before my time.

On Jan. 1, 1966 - IBM employed 3,300 in Rochester and Mayo Clinic had 3,321.

In January, 1968 - Mayo Clinic reported 3,850 employees in 1967. St. Marys Hospital and Methodist Hospital were not part of Mayo and reported 1,500 and 1,104 respectively. IBM listed 3,800 for 1967. Combined, IBM and Mayo employed 25 percent of Rochester's workers, according to the article.

In 1988, PB legend Ken McCracken asked Dr. Charles H. Mayo II what the Mayo brothers would have thought about how large the clinic had grown. They would approve, though Dr. Will would have "agonized" over the growth.

In September 1965, the young Miracle Mile Shopping Center displayed a car that Russia's Joesf Stalin had built for $87,000 and later gave it to China's Mao Tse-tung. by @kigersnotebook

Wow. Walking around downtown Rochester feels like being a mouse in a maze. Is this just a Mayo Clinic experiment testing people's adaptabilty? If so, I am pretty sure that I failed. by @kigersnotebook

A 50- something man struggling to describe love and life to two 13-year-old boys.

“What could he say that might make sense to them? Could he say love was, above all, common cause, shared experience? That was the vital cement, wasn’t it? Could he say how he felt about their all being here tonight on this wild world running around a big sun which fell through a bigger space falling through yet vaster immensities of space, maybe toward and maybe away from Something? Could he say: We share this billion-mile-an-hour ride? We have common cause against the night.” - Ray Bradbury, "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

Thank you, Lucy K. of Diatom Books for having a copy of the book that I was looking for on her shelves. by @kigersnotebook
