Sophomore year, Kimberly May flew home to New Zealand and told her mom she was done with America.

She couldn’t break 2:10 in the 800. Couldn’t finish workouts. Felt like she was wasting her time.

Her mom’s response: “Give it six more months. Give it your all. If you still hate it, come home.”

She gave it six months.

By the end of college she was one of the best 1500m runners in NCAA history and signed a pro contract with New Balance Boston.

In this episode:

→ The conversation that saved her career and what actually changed after it

→ Why her easy days at Providence were 6:30 pace — and how she didn’t realize that wasn’t normal

→ What it’s like navigating your first pro injury when you’ve never been hurt before

→ The advice from veteran teammates that shifted her entire perspective on patience

She also told me something about how she races that I did not expect.

🥉 @kiimberleymay wins Bronze over 1500m at @rhineruhr2025

A slow and tactical race with a flying last 300m saw Kim battling with the Swiss and GBR athletes over the final 100m for the medals.

NZ’s first medal in the track in our last race of the champs

@rosatwyford also finished in 11th with 4:23.97 - two kiwis in the final, how good ✨
