If your ex called you to meet for dinner, are you going? Matter of fact, is their call going to connect 🫣?

When her ex-fiancé, Dallas calls, Jada puts on her best dress and takes a seat at Table 17. Whilst they unpack what went wrong in their relationship, the night becomes a cocktail of emotions. Awkward moments, tears, reminiscing, laughter, eye rolls - you name it. Sitting in the audience, I went through every emotion with them.

I really enjoyed this play! It explored the complexities of relationships and how you can be in love with someone and begin to feel like they no longer see you. It was thought-provoking, controversial and funny in all the right places, so it landed just right.

10s across the board! 👏🏾

Showing at @kilntheatre until October 24th 💕

The month of October may be designated to celebrate Black history in the UK, but over here, we celebrate Blackness all year round. 🤪

Our love for books by Black authors naturally extends to a love for consuming Black media in all its forms. So, @_muhsinatt and I have put together a list of some of our favourite Black series and films, some oldies that you may recognise and some newer releases too.

Have you got any favourites from this list? Save this post for when you fancy switching things up from the pages or simply feel like trying something new. 🖤

Book Review | Finding Me by @violadavis
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve seen many movies with Viola Davis and always thought she handles every role with such authority and poise. After reading her memoir, I understand why.

Reading about how Viola came to be the internationally acclaimed actress we all know, while also learning about her troubled personal life and upbringing, made me think about how we show up in our everyday lives while fighting things nobody else knows about. We all come from somewhere, and that somewhere is what makes us unique.

I really enjoyed her anecdotes about growing up with her five siblings, and it made me think about lots of childhood memories with my own siblings. There is never a dull moment when you have several siblings!

I don’t read memoirs often, but when I do, I always think writing one is so impressive. Being able to piece together key moments of your life, neatly package them into a book and then share them with the world does not seem easy to me. How do you remember everything? How do you decide which parts to leave out?

What I took away from this memoir is that resilience, perseverance and self-belief can help you overcome some of the hardest battles you may face. Viola’s story is a reminder that we never really know what someone has had to overcome to become the person we see today.

📖For UK Black History Month, @kikisreadss & I have put together a list of books by Black British authors, divided into three categories: Fiction, Poetry and Non-Fiction.

🗺️As we explore our history and identity, we also make space for books centred around love, friendship, joy, imagination, adventure and ambition.

📚This list is a testament to the fact that Black stories aren’t just centred around trauma. They aren’t monolithic. They are diverse and expansive.

🥰Whether you’re looking for your next read or revisiting an old favourite, we hope this list helps you discover something new.

Book Review: Hurricane Summer by Asha Bromfield
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don’t recall reading many books that explore a father-daughter dynamic but as a girl who was raised by her father, they hit hard and stay with me. At some points, I was reading like, “is this camera on me?!”

Whilst Tilla loves her father deeply, their relationship is marred by distance, hurt and disappointment. At the age of 18, a summer spent visiting her father in Jamaica teaches Tilla that your first heartbreak isn’t always romantic, although you can expect that to follow.

As Tilla matures over a life changing summer, the reader is taken on a journey with her. The writing is so vivid and every bit of scenery and character was clear in my mind as I turned the pages. At some points, I wanted to hug Tilla. A few times, I cheered for her, and at others, I wanted to ask her if she’d lost her entire mind!

A beautiful and visceral read that left me with lots to think and talk about. taken in London, United Kingdom by @kikisreadss

Book Review | Summer Rolls by @tuyen_does
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A mother and a daughter who can’t seem to understand each other. A tale as old as time. And yet one that I never get bored of exploring.

In Summer Rolls, we meet Mai and her mother Trinh. Having fled Vietnam due to the war in the 1970s, Trinh had a very different upbringing to Mai, who was born in London in the ‘80s. They are constantly at odds with one another. Then you have Mai’s older brother Anh and their father, Dinh. Within the family, years of trauma, cultural differences and unspoken feelings has impacted their bond and each family member seems to be carrying the same hurt, which manifests in very different ways.

Although Mai is the central character, I really liked how we get to hear from each character’s perspective. This is a heavy read but well balanced with a fitting ending.

I also enjoyed the Vietnamese words and phrases that are interspersed throughout the novel.

I had high hopes picking this up and I was not disappointed.

A must read! 💚

A few weeks ago I went into @roundtablebooks in Brixton. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been past this bookstore or been in the vicinity and it was either closed (as I was in the area too late) or I didn’t have the time to stop! They have the most AMAZING selection of diverse books and I spotted so many books that are already on my TBR - as well as some familiar bookish faces 💗😛 @siennaa.reads @fragrantpages @amalisreading_ @cecez_libraryy

I didn’t buy any books this time but looking forward to going back and doing so!

P.S I love the lyrics to this song 🥲

BOOK REVIEW

The Attic Child by @lola.jaye
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Where do I even begin? I’ll start by saying it’s undoubtedly a 5 star read.
I’d been seeing The Attic Child everywhere for ages before I finally picked it up, but truthfully, I was in no rush to read it. It was one of those books I had a good feeling about and I think I read it at the right time.
All I knew going in was that it was historical fiction (one of my favourite genres), and I’d seen countless glowing reviews, many from readers whose taste I trust and often share. Going into this almost blind turned out to be the perfect way to experience it. I have purposely tried not to share too much of what happens in the story so that you can experience it in a similar way, if you haven’t already read it that is.
It reminded me of one of the simplest pleasures of reading: discovering characters you’ll never forget. What makes this story even more powerful is that, although it’s fiction, it’s inspired by the lives of real people who lived through the periods the novel explores.

With dual narratives, there’s almost always one storyline you find yourself more drawn to, and for me, that was Dikembe’s. That said, both his and Lowra’s stories were beautifully developed. I haven’t read a novel this poignant in a long time, and there were so many moments where I found myself marvelling at how imaginative and skilful Lola must be to weave together a story like this. It was well paced throughout and then tied together perfectly by the end.

I also really appreciated the epilogue. The additional historical context and insight left me feeling even more satisfied with what I’d read.

If this is on your TBR, then do yourself a favour and read it ASAP!
