my definition of “rich” has nothing to do with money.

It’s this. 12,500ft above sea level, standing above the clouds at Shira, watching the sun set over Mt. Meru.

No signal. No noise. Just this.

Would you wake up for this view? 👇

KARANGA CAMP — 3,995m 🏕️

This is the camp that saves your summit.
Most people think Barafu is base camp. It’s not. Karanga is the secret weapon.

Barranco (3,950m) -> Karanga (3,995m) -> Barafu (4,673m)
Why? Climb high, sleep low. We don’t jump 700m in one day like 6-day routes do. We let your body make red blood cells for 2 nights at almost same altitude.

It’s also the LAST water point on the entire mountain. That river down there? Our porters carry all water from here to Barafu. After Karanga, everything is carried on backs.

Arrive midday, hot lunch, nap, acclimatization hike to 4,200m, sunset over Kibo glaciers, sleep at 7pm. Tomorrow: Barafu, then midnight summit push.

If your operator skips Karanga, ask them why.

Comment “KARANGA” - Get our Karanga to Summit timeline + packing checklist

On Kilimanjaro, Barranco Wall is the big steep ridge you climb right after Barranco Camp.

It’s not a vertical wall like the name sounds — from a distance it looks like a wall, but up close it’s a steep pile of solidified volcanic rock and scree.

Quick facts:
Where: On the southern side of Kibo, just above Barranco Camp. You meet it on Machame, Lemosho, and Umbwe routes. Elevation is around 3,950m - 4,200m

How big: About 257 meters / 843 feet high above the Barranco Valley. It was formed when lava flowing from Kibo cooled on its slopes and was shaped by erosion.

Why called Barranco? Barranco is a Spanish word for a deep ravine or gorge.

Nickname: Guides call it “Breakfast Wall” — because you tackle it first thing in the morning after breakfast at Barranco Camp.
Is it hard?

It looks intimidating, but it’s a non-technical scramble, not technical climbing. You don’t need ropes or climbing gear — you use hands for balance.

It takes most groups 1 hours to get to the top. The main challenges are:
1. Altitude - you’re at almost 4,000m, so you move pole-pole
2. Hands-on sections - a few spots where you have to scramble on all fours
3. The Kissing Rock - a narrow ledge where you have to hug the rock face to pass. That’s the most famous part.

Once you’re on top, you get amazing views of Karanga Valley and the southern glaciers, and you continue to Karanga Camp.
For your clients — tell them to:
• Leave Barranco early, wear gloves (rocks are cold and sharp)
• Small backpack, 3-point contact, don’t rush
• No fear of heights training needed, but they should be comfortable with exposure

POV: You think you can’t make it. Then you look up.

That dusty trail? It’s the road to Stella Point - 5,756m / 18,885ft above sea level.

One more push and you become a summiteer.

Would you sit here or keep climbing?
