Happy 79th birthday, U.S. Air Force 🎂 

Chuck Bednarik | B-24 Waist Gunner, USAAF, 1943-1945

Enlisted at 18 and flew 30 combat missions over Germany as a waist gunner with the 8th Air Force. On one run, his crew hauled fuel behind enemy lines to Patton's tanks. Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war, he went to Penn State, went first overall in the 1949 draft, and became the last 60-minute man in the NFL.

Chuck Yeager | Fighter Pilot and Test Pilot, USAAF/USAF, 1941-1975

Enlisted as a mechanic; talked his way into a cockpit. Flew P-51s with the 357th Fighter Group. Got shot down over France, escaped with the Resistance, then argued his way back into combat and bagged five enemy planes in one day. Broke the sound barrier in the X-1 on October 14, 1947, with two busted ribs from falling off a horse.

Maj. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt | Fighter Pilot, USAF, 1992-2023

Became the Air Force's first female fighter pilot in 1993, weeks after the combat exclusion policy changed. Flew the F-15E Strike Eagle, taught at the Weapons School, and logged 3,000+ hours, including 300 in combat over Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2012 she took the 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson, becoming the first woman to command an Air Force combat wing.

Gen. Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. | Fighter Pilot, USAAF/USAF, 1943-1978

Trained with the Tuskegee Airmen. 101 combat missions in Korea, 78 more in Vietnam flying F-4s with the 8th TFW "Wolfpack." In 1975, he became the first black four-star general in any U.S. service.

Tech. Sgt. John A. Chapman | Combat Controller, USAF, 1985-2002

First airman to receive the Medal of Honor (2018) since Vietnam while assigned to the 24th Special Tactics Squadron in Takur Ghar, Afghanistan, March 2002. by @killcliff
