Tyson ~ Now & Then

The Older Tyson

Tyson has become a part of our culture with the rise of his one man shows, his Hot Boxing podcast, his Tyson Ranch, Boxing Clubs and interviews such as the Joe Rogan podcast and others. His wisdom and intelligence, the frailty showing his emotional side is something we didn’t see in the ferocious young kid.
I wanted to show the two sides of Tyson in this piece ~ The peaceful side and the ferocious side.

The Young Tyson
As a 12 year old I was fascinated with Tyson and his story. A juvenile delinquent being saved from a life of crime. He had no role models, both parents were drug addicts his dad walked away when he was born and his mother left to raise him and two siblings. Tyson has said
“My mother would feed me liquor and drugs to get me to sleep”
By the age of 13 Tyson had been arrested 38 times he was sent to the Tryon school for boys in New York. It was here that the Juvenile Detention center counsellor/ youth worker and former boxer Bobby Stewart could see something in him. Stewart trained him for a few months before introducing him to Cus D’Amato, the man who would launch Tyson into boxing greatness and become his legal guardian.
D’Amato had already guided Floyd Patterson (heavyweight) and Jose Torres to world title honours.
From the age of 13 Tyson impressed D’Amato with his physical size and strength and sparring full grown men…after watching spar for the first time he said that this is the future heavyweight champion of the world!!
Cus D’Amato’s mind and psychological impact on Tyson in these early years is so profound and intense from an early age. Remember that from the age of 13 Tyson was told every day that he was greatest fighter Cus had ever seen. The desire and mission for Cus was for Tyson to become the youngest ever heavyweight champion of the world. He had even used hypnosis on Tyson during this time. An amazing achievement in what the mind can achieve.
At age 20 in 1986 Tyson became the youngest ever heavyweight champion of the world.

Dreams to Reality

As children we all have dreams…these dreams often relate to our talents and hobbies or maybe what we see on tv or media.

The traditional path often leads us away from those dreams…it’s not a bad thing, sometimes life just happens. We go to school and learn those basic tools to deal with life and in some ways it’s funny how that if you could read it, remember it and repeat it, you were often classed as intelligent….that certainly wasn’t me but I did know I had a talent and other qualities that if pursued could develop into something. I had a dream as a child to be a professional Artist….the space between the child’s dream and the reality is years of persistence, desire, hustle and grind!

This painting relates to those dreams and passions and tells a story of persistence and a continued desire from an early age to keep going through all the losses and wins. Lopez Sr first started training his son around 2003 at the age of 6. He reached the finals of the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Americas to earn his place in Rio. Lopez also won the 2015 National Golden Gloves. He competed in the men’s lightweight event at the 2016 Summer Olympics representing Honduras.

He signed with Top Rank in 2016 and won his first world title at Lightweight in 2019 in his 15th professional fight beating Richard Commey by KO in the 2nd round.

He became unified champion in 2020 beating Lomachenko by unanimous decision. Lost the titles in 2021 to Kambosos.

On April 8, 2023, it was officially announced that Lopez would attempt to become a two-division world champion and challenge undefeated WBO and The Ring light welterweight champion Josh Taylor on June 10 at the Hulu Theater in New York City. He won the fight by unanimous decision, becoming a 2 division world champion!!

What a journey ~ Eddy & Canelo ~ his professional debut at just 15 years old in 2005 and still winning world championships in 2026 🙏🏻👊🏻

He got paid 800 Mexican Pesos that’s around $40 For his first fight. When I relate that to my art career. I was paid £50 for the first painting I sold when I was 15/16.
