When I was little, we escaped at Easter to the Canary Islands, where I befriended an old fisherman who, every morning without fail, would bring me a hermit crab from his morning fishing trip.

I remember them being huge and playful, and for the rest of my childhood I became obsessed with finding hermit crabs everywhere. Mostly, I just really loved their name in French: Bernard-l’hermite.

Then I grew up and mostly forgot about them.

Until university, when I somehow ended up writing my dissertation, The Nomadic Tales of a Homesick Hermit Crab. Not long after, I started my own nomadic life, working and travelling around the world, when years later, on a visit to @miss_jess in Rye, I found a hermit crab Jellycat and obviously couldn’t leave without him. He came along on my adventures and became my little grounding buddy every night before bed.

Of course, I named him Bernard.

And then I became sedentary. And I kinda forgot about them.

Until my first night dive in Koh Tao, where we saw the biggest specimen ever, and I started obsessively sketching them again.

So that evening in the Maldives with Mum, when I started seeing their little legs scuttling around on the ground, I dove straight back into childhood. Observing them going around, uncovering their lair, and just travelling back into my childhood.

One of my favourite evenings of the summer. Here’s to always remembering that little kid in us, and looking at the world with playful eyes.

As kids, we were told about trouts with teeth as big as our little feet, roaming around our alpine lakes, that would nibble our toes and drag us under.

I still swam, but as soon as something would touch my skin, I’d forget to breathe, and swim as fast as I could to reach back the shore…

I always loved the open water.

To be floating on my back, observing the sun glistening on the surface.

I just had to force myself to forget about everything underneath.

But my curiosity and love of capturing light took over and with a camera in my hands, I dove under.

and I entered another world, where time seems to stop, where swimming becomes flying.

Sometimes I still feel a little scared and a knot in my throat and the urge to swim away.

But I remember I breathe

And just keep on swimming

I used to be scared of fish. Even though the water always was my happy place 🌊
