It is always an honour to share space and have a yarn with Deadly First Nations Queens 🙌🏾 Yesterday I had the opportunity to learn from Aunty Kim Ah Sam who is no newbie to the world of fine arts.

I was captivated and in awe of her, savouring every golden wisdom she had to share around her passions, practice, and artworks. I am grateful for the knowledge she shared as we were lead through this very special gum nut activity.

You are an absolute inspiration Aunty @kimahsam and I can’t wait to see more of your artworks. 🖤

On Saturday, our @artisan afternoon on Minjerribah was made even more special. We welcomed Aunty Esmae from @hopevaleartsandculture, who was visiting Minjerribah for the first time. @delvene_cockatoo_collins_art and her mum Aunty Evelyn gave her a warm welcome. Aunty Esmae (aka Fay) Bowen has a family connection to @quandamooka country, and her first visit was filled with storytelling, meeting new people, eating, and creating. We also had @andreadezso from the #rhodeislandschoolofdesign teach us some #bauhaus pop-up craft. @northstradbrokemuseum …Ipswich-based artist @kimahsam discovered Kalkadoon connections with new friends on the way over and got busy weaving on the way back. Art that is woven by intuition 🧵✨

Kalkadoon/Kuku Yalanji artist Kim Ah Sam brings her incredible weaving to the forefront in the Triennial.

Ah Sam has produced a suite of ten works that engage with weaving as a site of abstraction. She invokes both traditional and contemporary weaving techniques with unpredictable intrigue; her weaving is led entirely by intuition and is singular in the sense it cannot be readily explained or reverse-engineered.

Kuku Yalanji and Kalkadoon artist, Kim Ah Sam’s works explore the connection between Country and the human body through sculpture. For Melbourne Art Fair’s BEYOND sector, Kim has produced ‘Before & Beyond, Our Journey’, a constellation of levitating sculptures which gently hover and spin, possessing a kinetic quality.

Speaking with Melbourne Art Fair, @kimahsam provides insights on her self-taught, intuitive and improvisational weaving process, her use of recycled materials, and capturing personal journeys on Country through her works.
