We are delighted to present Got Your Back, a new exhibition by Auckland printmaker Janet Hughes, opening Saturday 10 October, 2pm -4pm.

A solo show in the catalogue, a group show on the walls. Got Your Back brings together a lively gathering of figures, each reflecting Janet’s enduring fascination with the human form and the creative communities that have shaped her work.

Featuring a vast array of original works, Got Your Back brings together two creative passions that have shaped Janet’s artistic journey: monoprinting and life drawing. The exhibition celebrates the human form, particularly the often-overlooked beauty of the back, while reflecting the friendships, connections and sense of community that have sustained her practice.

“These are not the easiest conditions to create within, at all—but they might just be the perfect conditions to find out what we are really made of as artists from Aotearoa New Zealand.
Traces of Aotearoa emerges from a world in flux—global, local, personal, political. These voices annex a timeless talanoa of women: visually, literally, forcefully—a searing, tangible hymn of the messy, yearning, beautiful, and fraught miracle of daily life.” - @courtney.s.meredith

Traces of Aotearoa is a multidisciplinary anthology of poetry, prose, and visual art by women writers and artists responding to contemporary life in Aotearoa New Zealand. The collection reflects on the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, environmental uncertainty, and shifting identities, offering a thoughtful archive of women’s creative practice at the southern edge of the Pacific.
Contributors include Commonwealth Poet Laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh @selinatusitalamarsh; leading visual artists Janet Lilo, Ayesha Green @ayeshagreen, Alex Scott @alexscott.studio, Fa‘amele Etuale @faameleetuale , Penny Howard @pennyhowardart, and the intergenerational Tongan mother and daughter duo Sulieti Fieme‘a Burrows and Tui Emma Gillies @tuiemmagillies ; acclaimed Pacific writer Courtney Sina Meredith; writer and gallerist Kim Meredith; emerging Rotuman/Pākehā voice Jane Lowe @hellojanelowe; Aotearoa born diaspora writer Shannon Huse Caldwell @shannon_huse_caldwell, based in Houston, Texas; and artist, designer and publisher Sally Greer @sallygreer.studio, whose return to studio practice marks a powerful creative homecoming.
Edited by Kim Meredith and Courtney Sina Meredith, Traces of Aotearoa brings together leading and emerging women writers and visual artists to document a period of profound social and cultural change in Aotearoa New Zealand. Spanning poetry, essays, and visual work, the anthology reflects on care, disruption, and continuity in the wake of the pandemic, while centring Māori, Pacific, queer, and diaspora perspectives. The collection serves as both creative reflection and cultural record.

‘Traces of Aotearoa’ Edited by Kim Meredith & Courtney Sina Meredith ~ masterminded to life inc the exquisite design of both cover & internal by Sally Greer is launching tomorrow October 3 at @kimmeredithgallery 2pm-4pm afio mai ~ haere mai 📖

All I can do is say thank you and acknowledge you both first and foremost @kimmeredithgallery & @sallygreer_ I was pregnant & seasick but you carried me through the project like a tired star over land. Additionally, some of your very best work is here within ToA and I cannot wait for the world to see it 👏🏾

This is often though not always the quiet reality of women in the arts, tirelessly managing family life while working & also - trying, yearning, carving to create.

ToA behind the scenes in development was exactly what the book stands for as a finished beautiful object - reaching out & connecting, talanoa & back & forth hui, it was my mother sending me emails reminding me I was beautiful & capable even when I felt vulnerable & exhausted, the invisible yet identity dependent tendrils between us.

Additionally, my beautiful partner Janet Lilo was curatorial support - she saw this book in an entirely fresh & impactful way, those who knows Janet’s work will be especially interested to see what she’s turned her eye to here.

This book is launching tomorrow and my heart overflows with gratitude to all of the contributors, words fail me in wholly articulating just how magically breathtaking you all are. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts once you receive your copies 📚 I hope you feel a great sense of eternal belonging, as I do, here within ToA.

Lastly a huge fakafetai lahi lele to our publisher NgāPātaka Kōrero o Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland Council Libraries without your support our vaka of words would not be ready for the waters of life - mauri ola alofa tele meitaki maata 👏🏾 by @kimmeredithgallery

Painting memory, solitude and the sea

For Auckland artist Eva Cadario, the ocean is more than a subject. It is a place of memory, reflection and connection.

Eva’s contemplative semi-abstract seascapes are inspired by personal experiences of immersion in nature. Richly textured and atmospheric, her paintings capture moments of stillness, inviting viewers to pause, breathe and lose themselves in the shifting moods of the sea.

After a career in medicine, Eva turned her focus to painting and photography, creating works that explore solitude, presence and the restorative power of the natural world. Her art is held in private collections across Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

“My paintings are a celebration of solitude and invite the viewer to get lost in them.”

‘Handmade Intelligence’ closes tomorrow at 4pm.

Zach Dudley is an Auckland multimedia artist: sewing, design, film, cinematography and music.

“I love every single art, I have a very inquisitive artform, when it comes to the art that I make, I can’t show you a picture but I can make you feel something,” says the artist whose strong faith underpins his artistic practice.

“For me, even my photos is all feeling, when I look at my work, I just think serenity, he says of his work ‘Serenity’ because that is the feeling I felt making this picture, it’s the feeling that returns to me every time I look at it.”

Tāmaki Makaurau photographer Jordan Hadlee is a Whitecliffe College Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate whose work reimagines the landscapes of Aotearoa through a unique photographic lens.

Following his 2024 solo exhibition, ‘Only the Stars Know Where I’ve Been’, at Stepdown Gallery in Hawke’s Bay, Hadlee continues to explore the connections between rural, suburban and urban environments shaped by his upbringing travelling across the country.

Using photographic compositing, he moves beyond the single viewpoint of traditional landscape photography, combining moments from different places into one image. The result is a series of striking “hyper landscapes” that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination, transforming familiar scenes into layered expressions of memory, movement and place. 📷✨

In July, I had the great pleasure of being part of Wai Whetū, the 2026 Matariki show at @kimmeredithgallery.

My piece was called Moment(o)/(s) and was a reflection of what the time Matariki means to me. Someone once said to me “life is just made of moments, it’s all you’ve got” and it couldn’t be more true. Matariki as a time of reflection so this piece represents all of the moments and memories that make up the previous year.

I hand blended, carded and spun the yarn from NZ Merino wool, knitting in fairy lights from the @thefairylightshop. Shoutout to @kingsleyspargo and his technical skills in hanging this one up in the window!

It’s such a privilege to be part of this amazing community that @kimmeredithgallery has built and to be able to be one of the “locals” represented is something I never would have thought possible before. It has also been a privelege to still be able to create, make and share over this last year as priorities have shifted a bit 🐥 I’m excited to see where this reset and realignment takes me creatively.

New memories and moments abound 💫 by @kimmeredithgallery

We’re grateful to Eva, Zach and Jordan for their generosity and to our audience for bringing such warmth and enthusiasm to the event.
