The way I am FIGHTING right now to be responsible and do my work instead of diving back into Velaris should be studied … help. Or don’t. Tell me it’s the responsible choice to read actually. If I could bottle the experience of reading Lily King’s Heart the Lover and sip on it for the rest of my days I would. Love is such a complex feeling, such a nuanced journey and this novel captures it so tenderly. It is big and loud and consuming, it is grieving and loss, it is pain and questioning, it is gentle and forgiving. And here, it is tragically, tenderly enduring. And I love that King didn’t just focus on romantic love. We get these glimpses of unwavering parental love and how far loyalty in friendship will go. The novel asks the questions: What happens when love, time, communication and self-certainty don’t align? I will carry this novel with me wherever I go. I will recommend it to anyone who asks. I sobbed. And I will sob again. #heartthelover #lilyking #literaryfiction by @kimpetitivereads
How do I explain that my hobbies now include dressing up and having dinner in dimly lit bookstores with my friends? What a phenomenal way to celebrate the release of Rebecca F. Kuang’s Taipei Story 🥢 Can every Monday start like this? Thank you @marymarycontrary_ and @swartemma for being the most extraordinary hosts and to @exclusivebooks @ebwfront and @jonathanballpublishers for bringing this all to life. Editing and Marketing are two of the most important steps in the literary world. Get them right and it’s best sellers lists. Get them wrong and well … grumpy readers being sold the dream and being delivered a lemon. Skin Contact was our @thesharedshelf.club September pick and we were divided on our thoughts on the novel. For me, this was a lemon. The premise of Skin Contact is intriguing. A couple decided to open their marriage in the hopes of finding their spark again. For Frances it’s the hope to find a spirited part of herself lost after the passing of her mother, for Ben it’s the hope of finding Frances again so they can settle down and have a baby. As you can imagine this is deeply complex and the couple face challenges particularly around self, trust, and communication. While I think the novel touches on some really interesting conversations around sexuality, monogamy, and communication, I felt a little like it skirted around them rather than opening the dialogue with the reader. Bless Ben and his approach to this by educating himself so intensely. But where was the readers education? Such opportunity! And while this is marketed as “the sluttiest book of the summer” it is not. While honest and human in its characterisation I think the marketing here is the shock factor when it probably shouldn’t have been. The chapter titles were the funniest part of this novel so beware if reading in public however my biggest frustration was that it was never clear whose pov each chapter was from. Some of us loved that, some us were annoyed. Overall I found it meh but a super quick read and it definitely leaves a lot to talk about. If you read it, let’s talk about the final scene and the milk. Only a year behind on The Booker Prize … but I’m getting there! Kiran Desai’s The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny was certainly deserving of the nomination. I found the novel to be quite a sprawling tale with a richness in the writing that kept me coming back to the story despite it losing me at times. The writing is so rich in sensory detail with such beautiful prose. I loved the exploration of love and loneliness despite our titular characters being always surrounded by people and it seems to question what it means to really belong. Their loneliness is not only romantic, it’s deeply embedded in identity and context and through this I learned so much about India and culture in this read. But it’s not just about loneliness. Desai did so much with this narrative: Migration and the immigrant experience, the intersection with gender, class, and race, the pressure of family expectations, all embedded within the relationship between India and the West. While this is incredibly impressive and complex was it maybe a little too much? I’m not sure where I stand on that one yet. I did however love the strong interest in art and storytelling and I’m further convinced that any novel that has this kind of conversation is an immediate investment for me. At times I felt that the narrative wandered a little too far from Sonia and Sunny, often philosophizing a little more than I’d like, and I kind of forgot what I was concentrating on but that beautiful prose draws you back in as if the digression never happened. That being said I admire the complexity and the gentleness with which Desai approached these very complicated themes. It’s ambitious, it’s rich, it’s a journey. I’m glad to have read it. #literaryfiction #thebookerprizes #readersofinstagram by @kimpetitivereads
I AM OBSESSED!!!! Give me book 2 immediately!! This is some of the most complex world building but also some of the most interesting I’ve ever read in a fantasy. A stabby FMC, a man who YEARNS for centuries, the most exquisite dragon lore, and so many questions still to be answered. Love love love. #whenthemoonhatched #fantasy #dragons by @kimpetitivereads
Zero aesthetics here, just a few pages of my @cocowyocoloring book and a whole lot of fun! Making time for quiet spaces and doing nothing but the things that bring me joy has been big on the agenda in that last few months. I’m so lucky to have been influenced to pick up a copy by @swartemma and to pull out my old markers, channeling my inner child. Nothing fancy, just a combination of @delistationerysa acrylic markers and some old @copicsouthafrica alcohol markers from my drawing days. And the real star of the show? A regular, run of the mill white gel pen. It’s safe to say my stationary collection is growing once again as I want to try more but a few markers and pens lying around the house can go a long way. Start with what you have, do it because it makes you happy, that’s all that counts 🩷🌸 #cocowyo #copicmarkers #adultcoloringbook by @kimpetitivereads
I was NOT prepared for the ending! But … a question to Red Rising fans: Does Pierce Brown get better at writing women? I’m feeling quite a gap with the female characters, they feel more like token characters rather than fully developed complex characters and I’m hoping that this improves like the online buzz suggests? What a fun time though 🪐 #redrising #goldenson #scififantasy by @kimpetitivereads

Strangers by Belle Burden got its fair share of hype surrounding its release, and rightly so. I found Burden’s writing vulnerable and honest as she takes her readers through her entire world suddenly, unexpectedly falling apart. You certainly feel her confusion and anger and I was surprised at the lack of bitterness in her writing despite the hurt she suffered. There’s something incredibly powerful in a woman who reclaims her voice and advocates for herself and her story. I found myself a little conflicted though. On the one hand I was rooting for her and angered at times that her story was silenced, ignored, contradicted and controlled. The plight of womanhood is laid bare for us within her story and she subtly cautions women to take their legal engagements seriously. However there is something within the memoir that raised questions around privilege and I need to sit with my thoughts on this a little more. A powerful memoir and a feminine resilience that is admirable. #memoir #nonfiction #bookstagram by @kimpetitivereads
