Like many creatives I find it challenging to stay in one chosen lane. I see ideas everywhere but I've learned along the way that if I want to do anything well I need to try and maintain some semblance of focus. Some days are harder than others…

I’ve been carving stamps for quite a long time but lately I’ve kept my supplies handy as I’ve been enjoying carving my ceramics into stamps. I love carrying a sketchbook - it’s always with me (thanks @travelers_company) and sometimes I will pull one of those sketches and carve it to make a print. I’m having a lot of fun with it, playing with another medium and seeing where it leads. I’ve been collecting some old frames ( I should probably say vintage as it’s sounds cooler but let’s be honest, they’re younger than I am and I absolutely don’t want to think of myself as vintage) and I can’t wait to see a collection of prints framed and hanging in a group. I’ve made some cards with one of the stamps, a few prints that I’ve mailed to penpals, and I’ve even printed a few canvas bags that I’ve sold at markets. I plan to offer them in my online shop so stay tuned for that~

It's gorgeous here today, the perfect mix of sunshine but cool enough temperatures to wear a sweater. I hope you're having a beautiful Saturday. by @kimtaylor.co

Today I’m swapping Film Friday for Forest Friday. I spent yesterday working on a few projects in my studio- namely replacing my work surfaces and then wandering the forest looking for small bits of nature's art. It was a gorgeous day and occasionally I need to spend time there the center myself a bit.

Sometimes laying the groundwork for future plans feels like it moves so slowly and while I continually remind myself that I’ve got 55 years of wisdom and experience behind me, my confidence falters a bit and anxiety creeps in. Thankfully I’ve also had 55 years to learn how to navigate these moments and I remind myself that things always work themselves out in the end, even if it’s not entirely to plan.

I think those of us working in isolation much of the time can find ourselves in our heads more than is healthy. I know I certainly spend more time there than I’d like, and anxiety and self-doubt do not make for good companions when we are all in there together. These days the two things that seem to be the best remedy for internal spiraling seems to be getting outdoors, wandering the forest or hiking down to the water OR connecting with other creatives who may live a similar existence and understand the value of community, even if it’s found remotely. Thank goodness for the internet!

Last month I spent a week with my cohort and it made me realize how much I’ve missed creative community in our new home. I’ve also realized that the only person responsible for finding that community is me and if I want to have it I need to nurture it. As someone who enjoys the solitude of working in my studio much of the time I now realize that I need to step outside of that space and make the effort to connect a bit more with others, sharing ideas, absorbing that wonderful creative energy, and returning to my studio inspired and recharged. Every day is a fresh start and I’m focusing on finding opportunities to do more of that going forward. Thank you for conversations reminding me of this @greysage.studio and @sabrinavisual.

I was in the studio today and thought I would share a quick update about what is happening there. It was a beautiful Sunday and I spent the morning in the studio trimming anything that was dry enough to trim and then spent the afternoon out on the ridge with a small bonfire, cleaning up some brush piles we've been building over the past while. The best part is it's a three day weekend here in Canada so tomorrow is another day full of possibilities. by @kimtaylor.co

It may not look like much yet but this has been a labor of love. @scottknightdesign has put hours into the space, working on getting it finished so that I have a space to display my work and invite people in to shop. It's a small space and my suspicion is that when I open it it will be by either appointment or invitation. But I can't wait to have it completed and see my shelves filled with work. by @kimtaylor.co

The fog rolled through last evening, obscuring the view of the sea & giving the evergreens the look of a watercolour painting. By morning the wind had blown in, pushing the fog away and, for a brief time, shutting down the power. Thankfully I already had a candle lit and the light from it allowed me to find the matches to light a few more. It’s back now and I’m hoping it stays on as I have work to do in the studio this morning.

It’s a long weekend here, Thanksgiving in Canada, and on our island it’s the annual Studio Tour. I believe it’s the 30th year - but don't quote me on that. I plan to take breaks from my own studio this weekend to visit a few of the ones on the tour that I’ve not seen but suspect will be inspiring. I’m also look forward to meeting more creatives here, building community. I’ve been missing that lately.

It’s also film Friday & after a month filled with travel (I was away more than I was here) I’m home for the foreseeable future. I’m feeling grounded and focused and truly, that is the state in which I thrive. As much as I want to think I’m a free spirit/fly by the seat of my pants girl, I’m not. And after 55 years of trying to convince myself that I am, I am fully embracing my need for grounding. I’m a planner and a list maker, and I love dreaming up projects that build on what we already have. So this autumn and winter I will be working in my studio, focused on making work for the holidays. And along the way I will be creating a plan for 2027, because 2026 was a year of learning but 2027 will be a year of putting all that I’ve learned into practice and building my pottery business. I have some ideas that feel big but I’ve finally come to realize that those big dreams are possible- I’ve been accomplishing them all along.

And, the film photos. 2027 is the year Mabel becomes a part of the plan. Also, I miss my dad and he matches Mabel in that sweatshirt, so world, meet my dad.

Happy weekend friends.

…and I’m home.

Four weeks, four trips, and it feels so good to be back where I belong.

This last week was spent celebrating the wedding of my eldest and his beautiful bride. The wedding weekend itself was magical in so many ways. To spend two days surrounded by so much love, laughter, and excitement was wonderful. I looked around numerous times and was hit by waves of gratitude for the people that came to celebrate with us. Both of the kids come from families with a LOT of branches on their family trees and to see all of those people come together- bio parents, bonus parents, siblings, aunties, uncles, and so many friends- and then to see ALL OF THEM celebrating and truly enjoying each other’s company, it was soul-filling.

Today was spent unpacking, doing laundry, trying to nap (after starting the day at 3 am), and catching up on a few clerical tasks. { I voted and got it sent out y’all! } I also organized the studio because come tomorrow morning I am back at it. I can’t wait to get working on some custom work I’ve got planned as well as work for a couple of winter markets I’m taking part in. I also plan to have an online shop open and *hopefully* an in-person gallery event closer to the holidays. I will announce it all in newsletters so make sure you’ve subscribed~

Thank you so much for your patience as I’ve navigated September and the start of October. I look forward to getting back to making tomorrow~

Film Friday and we're taking it back to the 90s today. Mostly because this little man, the one that made me a mama, is somehow, impossibly, old enough to get married and that's exactly what he's doing tomorrow. He's always been such a special soul and I love him with all of my heart. He's not on Instagram but I know he knows how I feel about him. I'm incredibly proud of him and so very happy that he has found someone who makes him as happy as @perhapsjess does. I'm going to do my very best not to be a sobbing mess through the entire day but I'm not getting my hopes up…

I promise after this weekend we are getting back to some ceramic content but first, I shall be celebrating having so many of my family members in one place.

Home for a whole two days and so grateful to be in the space I love most. Laundry and packing and a couple of nights of proper rest in our own bed and I’ll be ready to head south to celebrate my first born getting married next weekend. It’s been so busy these past few weeks that it’s taken me until now to really wrap my head around the fact that one of my boys will be a husband in less than a week. I’m really happy for him and his bride-to-be and can’t wait to celebrate the two of them and this beautiful love story they are writing. by @kimtaylor.co

Today we celebrate the man who makes it all work. This guy does it all and everything he does, he does well. He's funny, he's so smart, and he's incredibly patient with all of my quirky traits. He fills our home with beautiful music, the same home he designed and did so much of the work on. He encourages everything that I do and spends so much time building the things I need in order to make my pottery business a success. He bring music to our island as the music director of one of our island choirs as well as teaching lessons in our home studio. He spends hours a day designing buildings on our island as well as the one we used to live on. And he's even gone back to school to learn more about the design work that he loves. I'm so grateful to be able to share this sweet life with him.

Happiest birthday @scottknightdesign. I love that we're building this life at @porters_edge together. There's no one in the world I'd rather be doing it with. by @kimtaylor.co

I love film photos. I love the realness of them, the way they capture the world in way that leaves it feeling a bit fuzzy, a bit disheveled, imperfect.

This image was captured while I was making jam for the first time in many years. The counters are covered with all of the things I needed to make that happen. It's not "styled" – it's how it was while in the midst of jam making. (those who know me know I would never leave those red tongs on the counter if I was styling the photo… 😂😂) I want more of that in my life. The authentic beauty that is created when we are living a life that brings joy.

So in this season of building a home and a life that is rich and layered and imperfect, I would love to know what accounts you follow on this this platform that leave you inspired without being perfect or styled or overly curated. Accounts that make you want to look at the beauty of your own life and find those parts that bring you the most joy. Accounts that, if you walked into that life, it would look like you see in the images they share. I'm looking for authenticity friends. And it's getting harder and harder to find. So any recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated.

Have a beautiful week~

I arrived home yesterday after a whirlwind week with my @cohorts.art group and our mentor @sarahpikepottery in the BC mountains. It will take a while to process it all. From the moment we met at the airport that first day, we were like old friends. We've been working together for nine months, the five mentees meeting weekly on FaceTime and then the five of us meeting with Sarah monthly on Zoom. However our week spent in Sarah's studio, learning new techniques, sharing our individual gifts, meals together, so much laughter- it changed how I saw myself and my practice and my belief about what was possible.

We spent an evening sharing our favorite things about each other and the thing I think I'm most grateful for is that Sarah chose this group, connecting five people that had never met and giving them the gift of a year of exploring and learning and most importantly, friendship. In a practice where we often work alone in our studios, community is such a valuable asset. I'm grateful for each of these women and I know when our year with Cohorts is through, we will continue meeting and cheering each other on.

I returned to my studio this morning with fresh eyes. I still have a few really busy weeks culminating in the wedding of the one who made me a mama in October. However I’m going to begin to explore some of the lessons I brought home with me and broadening the scope of my work with pottery. I can’t wait to see where it leads. by @kimtaylor.co

Film Friday and remembering a very special adventure I went on two years ago.

Croatia and Montenegro, celebrating my brother turning 50. It was magical from beginning to end. I had never been to that part of the world and absolutely loved it.

On this trip I only brought a film camera, my very favorite- a hasselblad 500cm. It's a medium format film camera that shoots square images. It was such a gamble but I absolutely love how they turned out. I have about 50 more… We stopped in London first and I will share those images eventually.

Heading off Island this morning for my second to last trip away for a while. Next week I'm heading to see my boys and celebrate my eldest getting married. I cannot wait. Also, I'm really looking forward to getting back in the studio. If you're waiting for things I apologize for the craziness of these past couple of months. Life will return to its regularly scheduled programming the second week of October.
