Started seedlings late. I literally canNOT wait for warm weather. I usually buy plants. It's been years since I planted seeds indoors and I made sure to purchase heirloom and non-GMO seeds. I've gotten pretty good germination.

No need for me to plant a lot since it's just Mark and me, but even with our small garden, I'll end up producing at least 50% of our produce for the year. by @kimversations

Slowly but surely making progress

Darts done.

If anyone has a special tip or trick for matching darts with a pattern like this plaid, I'd be ever so thankful.

We had our daughter visiting last week so sewing was a bit on hold. Looking forward to getting back on track this week.

I FINALLY followed @brittanyjjones advice

She's right. You don't need to have long blocks of time to sew. You just need to make the decision to do it, set a timer, and get to sewing. I've literally had this pattern cut out for 6 weeks and I was just waiting for a chunk of time to sew.

Life is lifing right now and I want to wear this flannel tunic while we still have cold weather. I'm not sure I'll be able to sew every day but I am very confident that, in no more than six 30 minute sewing sessions, I should be able to finish this tunic.

With any luck I should be able to wear it while we still have cold weather.

New to sewing? Don't skip ironing and measuring.

Throwback to one of my favorite makes. The video is sped up, but it took me some time to carefully measure the hem on this jacket. You get the drift?.

If you want to splurge on something, make sure you have a good iron and a good pad on your ironing board. When I upgraded my iron I couldn't believe what a difference it made!

And take your time in measuring, especially things like hems. Future you will thank you.

Yes, it's cold in south Florida, but we still got to enjoy the beach. Took a boat ride from Marco Island to Keewaydin with friends. Feeling grateful.

A handful, or hand full, of potatoes from our garden.

This year's garden goal is to provide our family with 80% of our annual produce. I'm actively seeking ways to extend the growing season using cold frames and my mini greenhouse. I also plan to grow more root vegetables that store well. by @kimversations

January 13, 2024: Arugula & Carrots

I didn't focus on the garden much last year. Two years ago, though, I had a really great garden. I was still harvesting things even in the winter.

Next year's goal? To extend the growing season as long as I can, and to harvest at least 80% of the produce we eat from the garden.

I think I can do it! I've already started planning.

A chili recipe for a cold day

November is here. There's a dusting of snow on the ground. I left my husband's recipe for chili. We usually make it with ground beef but this time we made it with ground venison. You could even use ground turkey.

We make a crockpot full and freeze it.

🍲 Mark’s Chili
2 lbs ground beef (or venison, turkey, etc.)
2 cups chopped onion
1 green pepper
1 jalapeño (optional)
3 cloves garlic, minced
4 Tbsp chili powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp cayenne pepper
1 cup beef stock (or bouillon cube in hot water)
1 (28 oz) can diced tomatoes
3 (1 lb) cans kidney beans (mix dark + light)

Brown the meat, drain the fat, and toss everything into your slow cooker. (If you have a saute feature on your slow cooker or instant pot, even better.)
Cook on low 8–10 hrs or high 5 hrs.
Top with sour cream or cheddar and enjoy with a slice of crusty bread.

It's been months since I baked a loaf of sourdough. My starter has been tucked away in the fridge, quietly. Waiting for a reason to come back to life. It took a couple of days of feeding to get it strength back, but look at that rise!

This is my go-to sourdough – a version of Jamie Oliver's recipe I've tweaked over the years, (you can tell by the scribbles). This doesn't require a lot of work, just time. Most of the "work" is just letting the dough rest and do its thing.

We'll slice into this one today and I'll bake a few more loaves in time for Thanksgiving prep. I think sourdough makes the best stuffing.

When you work remotely and you’re visiting family that lives near the beach — if you get up at 6am, you can have half a day’s work done by 10. Hit the beach for a couple of hours and still get a full workday in. It might not work for everyone, but it’s what’s working for me right now. Not everyone’s version of work-life balance looks the same — and that’s okay.
