I walked past a Jeni’s Ice Cream window this week and saw a simple sign taped up: “Our priority is making people feel loved.” Then a list of what they believe in, plain as day, for every customer walking by to see.

No hedging. No corporate-speak. Just a company telling you exactly who they are before you even walk through the door.

Customers can tell the difference between a value statement and a values-driven company. One is words. The other shows up in how you treat people when no one’s watching, and in whether you’re willing to say something out loud even when it might cost you a customer or two.

The businesses I respect most aren’t the ones playing it safe to please everyone.

They’re the ones clear enough about who they are that the right people lean in, and the wrong ones self-select out.
