On this day last month, we convened a National Symposium on Indigenous Knowledge and Educational Policies.

Our mission was clear: to advocate for an educational system where Nigerian children are not restricted to choosing only Christian or Islamic Religious Studies, but are also given the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of their own culture, traditions, and community heritage.

Too many young people know the name of their community but lack understanding of the customs, values, and unique cultural elements that make that community special. We believe the time has come to ignite a meaningful conversation between key stakeholders in Nigeria’s educational sector and the true custodians of our cultural traditions.

This collaboration is essential to ensure that whatever is taught in schools is authentic, accurate, and specific to each community’s cultural identity.

The symposium was proudly hosted by the Epe Local Government Chairman, Hon. (Princess) Surah Olayemi Animashaun with HRH. Felix BRISBE BOB NABENA, (AYINMA II, Kabowei Kingdom, Bayelsa) delivering an inspiring keynote address.

We also held a powerful roundtable session featuring major stakeholders as panelists, who discussed the urgent need for Indigenous Studies in our curriculum. The proposed curriculum was formally presented by Araba Olawole Olakunle, Founder/CEO of SIOS, and thoroughly examined during the session.

What’s your take on this? Let the conversation begin!
