Best back nine in Britain. Never hosted the Open. Both true at once.

Hillside sits along England's Golf Coast, sharing a fence — literally, just weatherworn picket — with Royal Birkdale next door. Established in 1911, its defining moment came in 1967, when the club bought the duneland bordering Birkdale that's now home to its celebrated back nine. Fred W. Hawtree rerouted it, and the pedigree runs deep: his father, Fred G. Hawtree, had laid out Birkdale itself decades earlier alongside five-time Open champion John Henry Taylor.

After playing there in 1982, Greg Norman wrote to the club with the verdict that's followed Hillside ever since: "The back nine holes are the best in Britain."

The front nine used to play as a quieter warm-up to that back stretch — until Martin Ebert's 2021 revamp brought it up to the same standard. The result: a serious case for the finest links in the UK that has never staged the Open, though it's a regular Open qualifying course and has hosted the British Amateur Championship three times.

William Flynn didn't route Shinnecock Hills by accident. Look at it from above and three sets of consecutive holes form triangles — a design that guarantees golfers face the day's wind from every direction, never once settling into a rhythm.

It's a course built to reward the purest ball-striking in the game, and this June it did exactly that. Wyndham Clark led the 126th U.S. Open wire-to-wire at Shinnecock — only the ninth player ever to do it, and the first since Martin Kaymer at Pinehurst in 2014.

This is Shinnecock's sixth U.S. Open (1896, 1986, 1995, 2004, 2018, 2026), with a seventh already on the books for 2036. Few courses have tested more major champions — or exposed more pretenders.

Kingdom Cup may be over, but we’re not quite done reliving the weekend. ⛳️

Year 5 brought us back to Hilton Head Island for a few unforgettable days with an incredible group of guests, partners and friends — all set against one of our favorite backdrops in golf.

A huge thank you to @visithiltonhead for helping us bring another Kingdom Cup to life in the Lowcountry.

A little luck goes a long way 🎲

@bellagio brought the spirit of Vegas to Kingdom Cup with The Bellagio Lounge on Harbour Town’s iconic 18th tee. Golfers stopped for cocktails and a spin of the roulette wheel, with a mulligan on the final hole up for grabs.

Never hosted the Open. Hosted the Ryder Cup twice.

Southport and Ainsdale is the southernmost of the three great Lancashire links on England's Golf Coast — separated from Hillside next door by nothing more than a railway line. James Braid, the first golfer to win the Open five times, laid out S&A in 1925. Eight years later, it was already hosting major team golf: the 1933 Ryder Cup, where Great Britain and Ireland leveled the series 2-2, and the 1937 rematch, where Walter Hagen led the visitors to their first-ever Ryder Cup win on UK soil — a result Hagen called "the greatest thrill of my golfing life."

The course's signature moment is the par-4 16th, known as "Gumbleys." A ridge of sandhills armored with railway sleepers cuts across the fairway, hiding a cavernous bunker and turning the second shot blind. Clip the sleepers and the hole turns from strategic to punishing in an instant.

No Open pedigree, no shortage of history — S&A just wears it a different way.

The signature hole almost didn't exist. Then Rees Jones found the cliff.

TPC Danzante Bay's par-3 17th wasn't part of the original routing — it was added once the site revealed a green could sit 250 feet above the Sea of Cortez, ringed by a horseshoe bunker. Jones built the orientation as a nod to Augusta's 12th, but the real difficulty isn't the green. It's the drop.

"You have to convince yourself that you need one less club," Jones says. "The hole gets into your head."

167 yards of doubt, one very long way down.

Speed comes in four forms this summer. Pick your terrain.

🏔 Can-Am Maverick R — a 240-hp turbocharged two-seater built to climb rocks and eat rough terrain, with 35-inch tires and heavy-duty suspension. (Not for the golf course, despite what you're thinking.)

⛳️ Finn Scooter Gen 3 — the electric ride actually built for the fairway. High-torque, low-power, front-and-rear suspension, max 15 mph, and a solo seat that means no more waiting on a cart partner.

🌊 Kawasaki Jet Ski SX-R 160 — a 1,498cc four-stroke stand-up ski with a V-shaped hull for serious agility, built for riders who want race-day performance on demand.

⛵️ Fjord 39 XL — German engineering meets Scandinavian minimalism in a 39-foot dayboat, twin Volvo Penta engines, 45-knot top speed, and a master cabin made for slowing back down.

Land, fairway, water — the only decision left is which one first.
