Starting off breast cancer “awareness” month which really should be find and fund a cure month with some interviews with @rhondaswan @wildxtalks. Driving the point home that nobody dies from a lump in their breast or breast cancer. The dying is from the spread to the liver, lungs, bones and/or brain which makes the cancer Stage 4 metastatic. Stage 4 needs more! It is the only stage that kills yet it is the stage that is ignored and under funded. We can do better. A big shout out to our partner @kingkerina @genart for organizing the day for us. Thanks to @poly_global_world and @sarawongofficial for supporting our looks. I am that person who had breast cancer spread to my liver, bones, brain and most currently lungs. I want to see my kids graduate high school. I need more time. Madeleine Greta! My gorgeous, giving private little extroverted introvert. Your eyes have always spoken 1000 words since the day you were born. You're magical, beautiful inside and out and growing up way too fast, but I'll trust the process and just give in. You see people; not because you want to judge them, but because deep down you know how to protect them. You have always loved animals, babies and anyone that needed your support. You are a quiet giver and a loud complainer haha but only because you demand the very best in others and in yourself. You are focused AF, an amazing teammate and athlete and you care beyond measure for the principals and people that matter most to you. You are going to achieve whatever it is you want in life and your charisma, grace and beauty will help, but your drive will get you to the top. Thank you for challenging me every dang day and for reminding me what truly matters in life and what loyalty actually looks like. They broke the mold the night you were born and you entered this world with the same wide eyes and beaming spirit that you have today and that mama hopes you'll carry with you, every single day of your exciting life. Henrik, You're offfially taller than I am! (I'm in heels)! Happy 15th Birthday to My Son. To know you is to LOVE you. You are a musical force, a crazy talented gamer computer genius and you are super fluent in next dimension languages and subjects I'm learning are truly yours; from geopolitics to world history to musical genres to philosophies I can only define as Hank-isms.
You can hear a musical note and define the key and tone; you can see a quick image online and identify the historic time period and leaders and politics of the moment. Your mind is always on fire with ideas. Oh, how I love you and how very proud l am to be your mom. You're also funny as sh*t and clever as heck. This weekend marks the official end of summer. School starts tomorrow. This summer was challenging, so I've been reflecting a ton. Six years ago on August 14th, 2020, I missed a ferry that would change the course of my entire life and land me in a village called Corona Del Mar. It also happened to be my dad's birthday and he had just passed away earlier that year. This week, I so badly wanted to be in New York, as I had a work trip planned but a sick baby changed my plans. Friday came and passed. It would have been his 77th birthday but he only lived to see 70. I woke up a little sad on Friday and thought for a moment how cool it would have been to honor his birthday in New York. Ugh. Life, even in its toughest or most confusing moments, can still be beautiful. So I decided to honor him instead by soaking up the sun, enjoying a beach day, taking in a great dinner, seeing a grand movie in IMAX with my man and cheering on my daughter in football. Lately I've started to realize that I've learned a lot through losing my dad; and mostly, about love. It isn't measured by how good someone makes you feel; love is about how deeply someone has changed you. The former version of myself- a different layer that was thinner than the layers piled on since- broke down crying at the ferry terminal when I missed that boat to Catalina six years ago. But the new layers since are filled with gratitude; for not only the ferry that I missed, but for the hotel I checked into that day six years ago, and for the hotel concierge who saw me crying back then - and without asking why, suggested I take a little drive to a place called Crystal Cove - and to take a little detour through the Flower Streets along the way. Life doesn't always go as planned, but if we pay attention to the signs, we can still guide ourselves. This last week, being home in Newport, is exactly where I think my dad would want me to be, and exactly where he guided me to go, six years ago. Happy 77th birthday Big George. I hope in some way you know that we are thriving and we are grateful for the signs you send, to constantly ground us. And cheers to the Summer of 2026! I know I'm not even a big NBA fan; I always have loved college basketball more - and growing up as Big George's daughter, the Yanks and the Giants always came before the Knicks. But wow, to see New York in celebration and harmony like this.. it reminds me of the 2001 Yankees World Series spirit we felt together as NYers, two months after 9/11. Torre, Giuliani and Jeter ran the City - Our City - and we NY Citizens were united beyond measure, and it felt like pure magic. NY'ers shared a commonality and a love for New York City in November 2001 (the record latest games ever played in a Series) that triumphed anything negative. Sure we lost to the Dbacks that year (how did that ever happen?) but we came out of that series together stronger than ever and connected as ONE - NY. I used to work at ABC Disney back then high atop MSG at 2 Penn Plaza. Seeing these videos and seeing crowds of NYers and NY lovers united under basketball - it reminds me of a lesson my dad taught me just by watching him; He always stayed close to sports throughout his life, and he spent decades as the Athlete, the Coach and as the most dedicated Fan - I think he did so because the art of the sport brings humanity HOPE and UNITES us across race, religion, color and generations. I am so grateful to our NY Knicks for restoring a sense of love and community in Manhattan right now and for NYers around the world, at such a poignant time, no matter the final outcome (BUT LETS WIN!!). Beyond proud of my amazing stepdaughter Alexa Rokos, who will be part of the inaugural D1 collegiate flag football program at California Polytechnic this fall AND the first D1 flag program in the state of California. Flag football is the fastest growing women's sport in America. Alexa graduated Corona Del Mar HS in 2025 when there were no D1 programs available in this sport, so she and her dad (my amazing husband Theo Rokos) started the flag football program at Santa Barbara City College this past year, so that Alexa could continue her career. This past month, SBCC beat elite college club teams such as UCLA and USC! And CalPoly noticed 😉 So now this fall, she's headed to this elite academic and athletic school to be a part of history! The very first flag football team and a part of the very first D1 NCAA flag league! Alexa is such a star and I'm just grateful to be her fan. And as for my husband, he manages multiple tech companies, is my amazing co parent to 8 kids combined, and in his "spare" time, he is the head Varsity flag coach at CDM High School where my daughter Maddie plays (reigning 2025 CIF champions), co founder of the OC Pacific Power Youth Football League AND managed to co found and head coach SBCC this past year. After long work days, I witnessed Coach Theo and Coach Josh Calvin commute 4-6 hours round trip, sometimes 2-3 times per week from CDM to SB to coach this team so Alexa could continue building her legacy... and here we are today! Alexa is now a scholarshipped D1 flag athlete. I could not be more happy for their mutual success and especially for Alexa, who deservingly has the brightest future ahead. Also a special shout out to her amazing, dedicated mama Megan, and to her entire family and dedicated fan club. This day has been 15 years in the making with so many cheering Alexa on in her multi-sport career. I can't wait to continue this journey with y'all. Let the CALY POLY SLO Fan Club road trips to San Luis Obispo begin! Cheers Boo!!
