Did Rosalind Franklin know more about DNA’s structure than we thought? 🧬

New research from King’s and the Science History Institute challenges the long-held belief that Franklin failed to recognise the significance of her famous X-ray image, Photo 51.

The researchers found that Photo 51 was a carefully planned repeat of an earlier image, Photo 49, which Franklin had already used to calculate key features of DNA’s helical structure.

The findings offer a fresh perspective on Franklin’s contribution to one of science’s most famous discoveries. by @kingsnmes

We were delighted to celebrate Professors of Mathematics Roger Colbeck and Professor Yasser Roudi at the first Inaugural Lecture of the academic year, marking an important milestone in their careers.

🎤 Professor Colbeck explored one of quantum theory’s strangest phenomena — entanglement — and how it could play a crucial role in the future of cryptography.

🎤 Professor Yasser Roudi explored some of the big questions facing artificial intelligence — from whether machines could amplify each other’s mistakes to how we might prevent it.

Thank you again for everyone who joined us to celebrate and show support for our Professors! 👏

Last week the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Professor Francis Halzen for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a facility carved from a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice at the South Pole, and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos. 🏆

Dr Teppei Katori, associate member of the experiment and a colleague of Professor Halzen, had a lot to say about his time working his someone he calls an ‘inspiration’, and a project that changed the way we look at our Universe. 🪐

We sat down with him to talk about board games with people in the Antarctic, and what this prize means for him. 🐧 Read our blog via the link in bio. by @kingsnmes

What if more girls could see a future for themselves in space?

For #WorldSpaceWeek, we’re spotlighting King’s Distinguished Alumni Award-winner Arabi Karteepan (Mathematics & Physics with Astrophysics & PGCE, 2009), who’s helping make that future feel more accessible.

As Head of Physics at Croydon High School, Arabi founded Astrogazers to open up opportunities for girls interested in space exploration. Its Mission Pegasus aims to make Croydon High School the first girls’ school in the world to launch a satellite into orbit.

That’s why, in 2026, we celebrated Arabi’s work with our STEM accolade.

Know a King’s alum transforming the world through science, technology, engineering or mathematics? Nominate them in our 2027 King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards.

🔗 Nominate at the link in our bio.
