Did you know that Dalmatian's often smile and show their teeth when they're excited?

This submissive, toothy grin can look a little intimidating, but don't take it personally, they're just saying hello! 😄

If you are ever unsure if tooth-baring is a submissive grin or otherwise, look at the dog's overall body language. A relaxed posture, loose body and wiggly tail can help distinguish a friendly grin from a warning or sign of discomfort. by @kingstvets

Tick paralysis can cost your pet their life, and thousands of dollars in veterinary treatment.

If your pet is affected by tick paralysis, they could be spending several days in hospital, requiring intensive veterinary care, oxygen therapy and sometimes even mechanical ventilation (life support) to keep them alive.

And the cost? Treatment can easily run into thousands of dollars. Severe cases requiring intensive care and life support can exceed $10,000.

Please don't underestimate the risks. Make sure your pet's paralysis tick prevention is up to date, and perform thorough tick checks daily. by @kingstvets

Here’s student nurse Jack with little Sylvia, who is recovering after her recent procedure 🐱

After an anaesthetic, patients require close monitoring to ensure they are recovering safely and comfortably. This includes regularly checking their airways, mucous membranes, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature, as well as carefully assessing and managing any pain.

If you have questions or concerns about your pet undergoing an anaesthetic, particularly if they are older or have an existing health condition, our team is always happy to chat. We’re here to help put your mind at ease and ensure your pet receives the most appropriate care for their individual needs. by @kingstvets

A little reminder to keep the choccy treats out of paw’s reach this Halloween 🍫🐶

While our little humans can enjoy their Halloween goodies, chocolate is toxic to dogs and can cause serious illness, and in some cases, can be fatal. Please make sure lollies and chocolate stay safely tucked away and remind kids not to share their treats with their four-legged friends!

If your pup manages to get their paws on some chocolate, contact your vet immediately. by @kingstvets

Want to know how we treat a sore ear?

In order to identify the root issue, we perform cytology, along with a thorough ear examination, which will guide our treatment plan. If it's an ear infection, sometimes treatment is antifungal, sometimes antibiotics, sometimes both.

It's important to note that if it's an ear infection, the ear can look and feel better before the infection has fully cleared, so a recheck near the end of the treatment to repeat cytology is vital in order to determine if a longer course or change in treatment is needed.

If your pet is shaking their head or scratching at their ears more than normal, book them in for a consult so we can promptly stop a manageable problem from becoming a painful, persistent one. by @kingstvets

Sometimes taking medication can be an enjoyable experience for our fur babies 😄

This is Dr Africa's cat Fran enjoying some meloxicam after her desexing procedure!

Some pets are happy to take their medication, while others need a little extra encouragement. The key is finding what works for your pet.

Vomiting and diarrhea are among the most common reasons clients call our clinic. And when it comes to a pet’s digestive tract, vomiting and diarrhea are nature’s ultimate chameleon symptoms. They can point to dozens of vastly different underlying stories.

A dog who swallowed a missing chew toy can present with the exact same initial symptoms as a cat with pancreatitis or a pup with a mild viral bug. Treating an intestinal blockage with simple anti-nausea medication, for example, could delay essential surgical intervention and make a pet much sicker down the track. This is why, when you bring your pet in for gastrointestinal symptoms, it's important to be prepared for a slightly longer, more detailed consultation so we can get to the root cause of why they feel so unwell.

Indi LOVEEESS her @doggysnoozecenter orthopedic beds!

Getting a good quality bed is super important to not only provide a safe and cosy spot to snooze, but also to protect and cushion joints and muscles. This is especially beneficial for senior dogs, larger breeds, and pups with arthritis or other joint issues.

The orthopedic beds from Doggy Snooze Center feature dual-layer memory foam construction and removable covers, which makes washing super easy 👏

Because a good night's sleep is just important for our four-legged family members as it is for us! Choosing the right bed for your dog’s size, age and individual needs is a simple way to help keep them comfortable and support their overall wellbeing 💤 by @kingstvets

Bringing a puppy home is exciting, but there are a few important things to consider before you do 🐶

Firstly, be sure to consider the dogs adult size. A tiny puppy may grow into a very big dog, and so it's important to think about whether their size once fully grown will suit your home, lifestyle, yard, and whether you can meet their exercise and enrichment needs. It's also important to take into consideration that a bigger dog means a bigger food bill, and a bigger medical bill. As always, we recommend getting pet insurance straight away to help ease the financial stress of unexpected vet bills.

Early training and socialisation are also super important, helping your puppy develop good habits, build confidence and get the best possible start in life. We work with Mans Best Friend, who run their Canine Kindy classes outside our clinic on Saturdays.

There’s plenty to think about before welcoming a puppy into your family, so take the time to do your research and make sure you're ready for the commitment. After all, puppies don't stay puppies forever, and being prepared is one of the best things you can do to set you both up for a happy life together! by @kingstvets

Here Dr Africa is performing the polishing stage of a COHAT (Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) on beautiful Billie, a 9-year-old Kelpie x Blue Heeler.

Billie has a lot of gingivitis, as you can see from the bleeding around her gum line. By removing plaque and tartar build-up and thoroughly cleaning her teeth, we reduce the bacterial load contributing to gum inflammation, promoting healthier gums and helping prevent further dental disease.

Dental disease can cause pain and discomfort, even when our pets continue eating and behaving normally. Regular dental checks and professional cleaning help us identify problems early and protect pets from preventable pain and infection.

If your pet has bad breath, red or bleeding gums, visible tartar or changes in their eating habits, book a consultation with our team today. by @kingstvets

Our next Home Visit Day is coming up on Tuesday 20 October, with appointments available in the Murwillumbah, Stokers Siding and Burringbar areas.

If you live in one of these areas and think your pet would benefit from a home visit, we'd love to help!

Give us a call on (02) 6672 4322 to find out more about our home visit service and to book your appointment 🏡 by @kingstvets
